Chasing a league championship and facing the top team in the league, Byram Hills’ Lucy Bancone took matters into her own hands Friday.
The junior scored the go-ahead bucket with 20 seconds left, then added two clutch free throws that helped the Bobcats to a 55-51 win at Westlake.
Raquel Gaudio added a free throw with three seconds left.
Bancone had 16 points, six assists and five rebounds to give Byram Hills (10-7) its third consecutive win and second over Westlake during that span. Bobcats coach Mary Kate Burke said that matchups in the Section 1 Class A tournament will play a major factor in how far the team goes.
“Tall teams might be a problem for us, but teams that are guard-oriented match up well with us,” Burke said. “We could be that Pelham team that upsets people through pure hustle and hard work.”
Pelham advanced to the County Center last year as a No. 15 seed, the second-lowest seed to ever do so.
