Girls' basketball roundup: Burritt leads Harper Creek over Climax-Scotts


In a battle of two of the stronger girls’ basketball programs in the area, Harper Creek clamped down defensively Tuesday night to earn a 45-28 victory over Climax-Scotts in non-conference action.

Led by Haley Burritt’s well-rounded game of 10 points, seven steals and four rebounds, the Beavers led for all four quarters to improve to 7-3 on the season.

“We got up pretty big early and took our foot off the gas a little,” said Harper Creek head coach Matt Ellenwood. “I thought Climax played hard, but in the second half we took control and finished up.”

Also for Harper Creek, Nicole Gilbert led the offense with 13 points. Reagan Dishaw had eight points and five assists, while Olivia Leson had 11 rebounds.

For Climax-Scotts (5-5), Taylor Piper had 10 points, Mary Smith had eight points and eight rebounds.


St. Philip 52, (at) Colon 35: Emily Schaub had 11 points and seven rebounds to lead St. Philip to its fifth-straight victory. Also for the Tigers (8-3, 4-1 SCAA), Emily Freybler had 11 points and Mina Winkler had 10 points.

Lakeview 35, Portage Northern 27: Lakeview’s Stephanie Niemann went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the game’s final minute to keep Portage Northern at bay and help improve the Spartans record to 8-3. Also for Lakeview, Casey Looper scored 13 points, had five blocks and grabbed eight rebounds in the win.

Pennfield 44 (at)
Kalamazoo Christian 25: Shelby Miller scored 12 points, grabbed six rebounds and had three steals in the win for Pennfield (6-4, 6-3). Alexa Stephenson scored 12 points and blocked four shots and England Bennett scored six points with four rebounds and three blocks for the Panthers.

(At) Benton Harbor 84, BCC 26: Ka-Leah Ryan scored six and Sierra Smith added four points in the loss for BCC. Also for the Bearcats (3-8), Madisonn Jackson and Drayshell Banks each grabbed eight rebounds.

Gull Lake 62, Mattawan 44: Gull Lake improved to 10-1 on the season behind Mackenzie Latt’s 23 points. Kelsey Bauer added 12 points in the win for the Blue Devils.

(At) Homer 62, Union City 35: Kristin Nelson scored 19 points and had seven steals and Bailey Manis scored 18 points with seven steals and seven assists in the win for Homer (6-5, 4-3 Big 8). Also for the Trojans, Alyssa Boyd had a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds. For Union City (5-8, 2-5 Big 8), Rachel Sutherland scored 13 points and Rachel Wing had 12 rebounds.

Charlotte 61, (at) Marshall 40: Tierra Orban had nine points, five rebounds and two assists in the loss for Class B seventh-ranked Marshall. Also for the Redhawks (9-2), Cortazia Wilson had seven points.

(At) Olivet 39, Parchment 37: Kiley Ploehn hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 15 seconds left to lift Olivet (9-1, 8-0) over Parchment in the KVA contest. Hayley Walkowski scored nine points with 11 rebounds, eight assists and four steals in the Eagles’ win.

Reading 39, (at) Athens 29: Ally Fuller had 13 points and four steals in the loss for Class D fourth-ranked Athens. Also for the Indians (8-3, 4-2 Big Eight) Audrey Oswalt had eight points and seven rebounds.
