Girls basketball roundup: Oostburg's Huibregtse hits 1,000 points in win

Half-court shots are usually pretty memorable.

Maranda Huibregtse’s buzzer-beater from near mid-court kind of set a new standard, though.

The Oostburg senior joined some distinguished company — and in appropriately distinguished fashion, too — after she drilled a near half-court shot against Random Lake in a Central Lakeshore Conference game on Thursday. The buzzer-beater gave her team a wide lead going into halftime, and handed Huibregtse her milestone 1,000th career point.

“It was a pretty memorable 1,000th point, really,” her coach, Lisa Immel, said after the game.

“I’m just really lucky to be able to see all 1,000 of those,” added Immel, who also coached 1,000-point scorer Julie Raeder, who now is playing at Cardinal Stritch University.

Huibregtse finished the game with 24 points — putting her career output at 1,008 — and helped lead the Flying Dutchmen to a 63-44 win at home.

Shannon Boldt helped Oostburg (6-3, 5-0 CLC) with nine points. The Dutch led 36-21 at halftime.

Delaney Sinnen led Random Lake (1-6, 0-5 CLC) with 13 points.

“I couldn’t have gotten my 1,000 points without my teammates. …” Huibregtse said after the game.

She got to keep a ball with her name and Thursday’s date written on it to commemorate the milestone. “I won’t use it,” she clarified, noting she’ll “probably set it up in my room somewhere.”

“It just didn’t feel real at first,” she said, noting she wasn’t immediately aware that her buzzer-beater had tipped her past the 1,000-point mark.

“I just saw the clock counting down. …” she said of how the half-court play set up. “It was pretty much a luck shot. … I was surprised.”

Huibregtse is the sixth girls basketball player from Oostburg to move into 1,000-point territory. Megan Van Tatenhove is the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,347 points. Others on the list include Shelly DeSmith (1,264 points), Raeder (1,227), Kady Telschow (1,209) and Deanna VanderPlas (1,022).

“The only other 1,000-pointer that I’ve coached is Julie Raeder and she was almost in a league of her own when I came in,” Immel said.

“Just hats off to Maranda’s hard work and her dedication,” Immel said, noting the senior has spent “a lot of time in the gym” over the last few years. “It’s not something that just happened. She made that happen.”
