Girls basketball roundup: Strong 2nd half lifts South over Kiel

By

Lauren Pfile had a game-high 22 points and Jessika McNellis added a season-high 20 points as the Sheboygan South girls basketball team defeated non-conference foe Kiel 66-51 on Tuesday night at home.

Leading 36-33 at halftime, South (4-11) outscored Kiel (7-8) 30-18 over the final two quarters.

“We just made some adjustments at halftime and the kids were able to correct it and executed what we needed them to execute,” South coach Tyler Thomas said. “(McNellis) played huge tonight. She really stepped up as a sophomore tonight and carried us through a dry spell.”

Maddie Dahmer and Mia Voland each had 13 points to pace Kiel, which was without its leading scorer Cassie Schweitzer due to illness.

Leading 10-8 after the first quarter, Sheboygan North (15-0, 10-0 FRCC) held visiting Green Bay Preble (6-9, 4-6 FRCC) to score two points in each of the final three quarters for the home win.

“We really struggled to get going offensively and I thought our defense really got us going in the second half,” North coach Eric Spielman said. “We were able to create some turnovers and help get our offense going with some transition buckets, so that really shifted the focus of the game.”

Mackenzie and Madison Wolf led the Golden Raiders with 10 points each.

“They hit some shots early but we did a good job of forcing them to take contested jump shots and we defending the lane well, so it wasn’t a pretty basketball game, but it was the type of game good teams have to find a way to win,” Spielman said.
