Girls golf previews


City High

Coach: Jerry Hora (fourth season).

Last year: 4th place in MVC.

Returning letterwinners: Sarah Overton, Soph.; Addie Bockenstedt, Sr.; Emallie Bohensack, Jr.; Sky Shield, Soph.; Lillie Christophersen, Jr.; Lexi Wichmann, Jr.

Outlook: City High will feature a young but experienced roster in 2014 as six players with varsity experience return from last year’s squad that finished in fourth place at the Mississippi Valley Conference and regional meets.

The Little Hawks have just one returning senior in Addie Bockenstedt but have five other players returning with varsity experience.

Sophomore Sarah Overton is back after earning first-team all-MVC honors last year as a freshman while juniors Emallie Bohensack, Lillie Christophersen and Lexi Wichmann return along with sophomore Sky Shield.

West High

Coach: Mary Goodfellow (16th season).

Last year: 4th in MVC.

Returning letterwinners: Tiffany Danger, Sr.; Allye Boardman, Jr.; Olivia Ewing, Sr.; Mackenzie Marsh, Soph.; Avery Kout, Soph.

Outlook: West High will be long on experience as five players return with varsity experience from a squad that finished fourth in the MVC and second in the divisional meet last season.

Senior Tiffany Danger is West High’s top returner after earning first-team all-conference accolades last season, while junior Allye Boardman was a second-team all-MVC honoree.

Senior Olivia Ewing and sophomores Mackenzie Marsh and Avery Kout were both honorable mention all-conference performers a year ago.


Coach: Dave Coffin (fourth season).

Last year: 6th in CVC.

Returning letterwinners: Sami Juralo, Sr.; Brandi Rogers, Sr.; Tori Brennan, Jr.; Jo Huffman, Jr.; Abby Sheehan, Jr.; Mackenzie Fryer, Soph.

Promising newcomers: Haley Mclaughlin, Jr.; Audrey Streitz, Jr.; Ashlyn Mulcahey, Soph.

Outlook: Regina coach Dave Coffin will lean on the experience of his returning upperclassmen this season as the Regals bring back five players with multiple years of varsity golf under their belts.

Seniors Sami Juralo and Brandi Rogers are both fourth-year players while juniors Tori Brennan, Jo Huffman and Abby Sheehan are each in their third season with the team. Sophomore Mackenzie Fryer also returns with a year of varsity experience to her credit.

Clear Creek Amana

Coach: Nathan Carlson.

Returning letterwinners: Gabi Scarpa, Sr.; Anna Johnson, Sr.; Kaitlin VanVoorst, Sr.; Whitney Schutterle, Sr.; Nicole Davis, Jr.; Sara McGrath, Jr.; Haley Mougin, Jr.

Outlook: Clear Creek Amana boasts loads of experience this season as all seven of its returning letterwinners are upperclassmen.

The top returner for the Clippers is senior Gabi Scarpa, who placed 13th at the Class 4A state meet last season.

Scarpa carded an 88 at the one-day state tournament last season at the Ames Golf & Country Club to finish in a tie for 13th place and is one of four seniors on the Clipper roster.

Seniors Anna Johnson, Kaitlin VanVoorst and Whitney Schutterle all return with varsity experience along with juniors Nicole Davis, Sara McGrath and Haley Mougin.

Iowa Mennonite

Coach: Steve Nelson (second season).

Last year: 7th in SEISC.

Returning letterwinners: Breana Stout, Jr.; Michaela Prihoda, Sr.; Abbie DeWild, Sr.

Promising newcomers: Jess Bender, Fr.

Outlook: Second-year coach Steve Nelson has a solid foundation to build on at IMS this season as the top three scorers from last year’s young team return.

Seniors Michaela Prihoda and Abbie DeWild both return for Iowa Mennonite along with junior Breana Stout.

Freshman Jess Bender is expected to step into the lineup for Iowa Mennonite this season.

Lone Tree

Coach: Dan DeJong (first season).

Last year: 3rd in SEISC.

Returning letterwinners: Liz Griffin, Jr.; Morgyn Edwards, Soph.

Promising newcomers: Elena Sieverding, Fr.; Madison Forbes, Fr.; Liz Dodson, Fr.; Lily Star, Soph.; Allison Chewning, Jr.; Emily Davidson, Fr.

Outlook: Two key returners are back this season from a Lone Tree squad that made history by qualifying for regionals for the first time in school history last season.

Junior Liz Griffin and sophomore Morgyn Edwards both return this season for first-year coach Dan DeJong after helping the Lions advance to regionals a year ago.

Griffin was a second-team all-conference honoree a season ago while Edwards was a medalist in a meet last season.

A group of six newcomers that features four freshman will fill out the roster as Lone Tree attempts to build on the success of last season.


Coach: Tracy McArtor (seventh season).

Last year: 1st Place in CVC.

Returning letterwinners: Courtney Cayton, Sr.; Allyson Wertz, Soph.; Sydney Scarff, Sr.

Promising newcomers: Laura Yoder, Sr.; Mick VanWinkle, Sr.; Abby Pickard, Soph.

Outlook: Mid-Prairie returns two of its top golfers from last season’s squad that won the Cedar Valley Conference meet and will look to continue that success in the newly formed River Valley Conference.

Sophomore Allyson Wertz was a first-team all-conference performer a year ago as a freshman while senior Courtney Cayton earned second-team all-conference honors a season ago.

Senior Sydney Scarff also returns along with seniors Laura Yoder and Mick VanWinkle who competed for the first time last season as juniors.

Sophomore Abby Pickard also saw limited playing time last year and coach Tracy McArtor likes the progress she has made.

West Branch

Coach: Jan O’Neil (16th season).

Last year: 2nd in CVC.

Returning letterwinners: Ashley Finnegan, Sr.

Promising newcomers: Jenae Murry, Soph.; Haley Poula, Soph.; Emily Corr, Sr.;

Outlook: Veteran coach Jan O’Neil will have a young team in her 16th season at West Branch with five returning players being joined by 10 newcomers.

O’Neil has been impressed with the work ethic of her team and the Bears will hope to continue the success of last season when they finished third at the Cedar Valley Conference meet.

Senior Ashley Finnegan, a four-year letterwinner, is the top returning player for West Branch and qualified for the state meet last year as a junior.

West Liberty

Coach: Greg Guinn (45th season).

Last year: 2nd in CVC.

Returning letterwinners: Katie Meyers, Sr.; Kayla Smith, Sr.; Shannon McMichael, Jr.; Haley Peterson, Soph.; Vanessa DeBock, Soph.

Promising newcomers: Jazmyn Partida, Jr.; Shania Minor, Jr.; Alyssa McMichael, Fr.; Kelzi Mather, Fr.; Brittany Rock, Fr.; McKala Roser, Fr.

Outlook: Long-time coach Greg Guinn has five returning starters this season as West Liberty attempts to continue the success of last season when the Comets finish second at the Cedar Valley Conference meet.

Senior Katie Meyers is the top returning player after earning first-team all-conference honors and regional medalist honors a season ago.

Senior Kayla Smith will provide a boost in her return to the course after missing all of last season with an injury.

Sophomore Haley Peterson gained varsity experience last season as a freshman and joins two-year letter winner Shannon McMichael and sophomore Vanessa DeBock as the other two returning letterwinners.
