In somewhat of a surprise, only one area girls’ basketball team made it out of last week’s state district round.
What isn’t a surprise is that the lone team is Class D fifth-ranked Athens, which cruised to its eighth consecutive district crown.
The Indians (19-3) will compete in today’s MHSAA regional semifinal at Bloomingdale against honorable mention St. Joseph Lake Michigan Catholic (18-3), beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Athens is led on the year by Ally Fuller at 13.5 points and 3.5 steals per game. Audrey Oswalt averages 12.1 points and leads the team in rebounding at 7.8 boards per game.
The Indians are looking to return to the Breslin Center in East Lansing, after reaching the Final Four in back-to-back seasons. Last season, they fell in the state semifinal to Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes. In 2012, Athens made it to the championship game where it fell to Our Lady of the Lakes.
St. Joseph Lake Michigan Catholic coach Joe Jarvie announced he will retire after his 18th season as the Lakers coach. He told The Herald Palladium that his teams have never lost a regional game, going 10-0 with five regional titles.
