Green Oaks tops BTW at Parkway

The BTW Lady Lions went one and a half quarters without scoring a point, allowing Green Oaks to run away with a 54-21 win on Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the Parkway New Year’s Tournament, sponsored by Bossier Federal Credit Union.

With the majority of the Lady Giants starters sitting out the first quarter, BTW jumped out to an 11-4 lead behind four points from Tiaka Pearson. BTW’s Jasmine Walker scored under the bucket with 22 seconds remaining in the frame.

Things changed dramatically for Green Oaks (12-4) in the second quarter, when UL-Monroe-commit Princess Davis and her supporting cast entered the fray.

Stopping the Lady Lions (2-10) on every trip down the court, the Lady Giants ran out to a 17-0 quarter, tying the game three minutes in on a Troynecia Wilson bucket, then taking the lead for good on a Jalishia Brown putback on the next trip down the court.

“As you get further into your season, depth becomes a factor, so I wanted to get some minutes for my non-starters,” Green Oaks coach Shayla Canady said. “Even when the starters were sitting out, I was talking to them, pointing out things they needed to look for when they were in the game.”

After putting up a zero in the second quarter, the Lady Lions trailed 21-11 at intermission. They finally got back in the scoring column with 3:30 left in the third when Carmelisa Jenkins scored under the bucket. Freshman Kadeesha Gay followed Jenkins with four consecutive free throws to pull Green Oaks within 25-17, but that’s as close as it would get.

“We’re very young, playing nine freshmen and an eighth grader, so when they changed defenses to a man-to-man, it really picked up the pace,” BTW coach Terrence Winn said. “We didn’t do a very good job handling the pressure and threw away a lot of passes.”

Green Oaks led 34-17 by the end of the third quarter and out-scored the Lady Lions 17-1 to close the game.

“The repetitions our younger players got, will help us down the line,” Canady said. “We just have 10 players and three of them are seniors.”

Davis led all scorers with 17 points, despite playing just more than half the game. Jones added 10 for the Lady Giants, while Jenkins topped BTW with 5 points.

Green Oaks advances to play Plain Dealing, which drew a first-round bye, at 4 p.m. on Friday in the semifinals. BTW moves all the way to the consolation finals, set for 2 p.m. on Saturday in the Parkway gym.
