Ten players were selected, and Huskey is one of five players on the second team.
Early on Wednesday, Greenville High’s Keenan Huskey was named an All-American, having been selected to the USA TODAY Sports’ All-USA boys golf team.
Ten players were selected, and Huskey, the state’s top junior golfer, was one of five players on the second team.
Then Huskey played 36 holes in the U.S. Junior Amateur Qualifier on the Riverside Course at Greenville Country Club and put together rounds of 71 and 61. The latter was a course record, and he finished second to qualify for the prestigious tournament for the second year in a row.
“I’ve had a good day,” Huskey said.
During his round of 61, Huskey, who has signed to play for the University of South Carolina men’s golf team this fall, had eight birdies and an eagle.
“It was unreal,” he said. “I’m still in shock. I’ve never had anything like that happen before. I was hitting the ball incredibly good. I honestly never had to make a long putt. I hit it so close to the hole all day long. I literally had tap-ins all day. It was crazy.”
Huskey qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship July 21-26 at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas.
Last year, Huskey played in the U.S. Junior Amateur at Martis Camp Club in Truckee, California, near Lake Tahoe. He made the cut in the stroke play portion of the tournament and then lost his first match.
“I learned a lot from it last year, so hopefully that can traslate into something good this year,” he said.
Before heading to Texas, Huskey will compete in The Players Amateur July 10-13 at the Berkeley Hall Golf Club in Hilton Head.
Already ranked No. 1 by the S.C. Junior Golf Association, Huskey last month won his second consecutive South Carolina High School League Class AAA championship. That was followed shortly by an invitation to the North-South All-Star high school tournament.
In April, Huskey finished fourth in an international 54-player field at the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley Country Club in Aiken.
That achievement came despite not receiving an invitation until a few days before the tournament began.
Seven of the 10 members of the All-USA team competed in the Junior Invitational.
In February, Huskey got his season off to a strong start by winning the Sea Pines Junior Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links, another tournament that drew an international field.
