GREER – On the power of Dorian Lindsey – more so his speed and hands – the Greer High football team rallied from a 14-0 halftime deficit to beat Clinton 23-14 on Friday night at Dooley Field.
Lindsey caught seven passes for 116 yards with two touchdowns and rushed 15 times for 117 yards with a touchdown to lead the Yellow Jackets to victory in their season opener.
“We got down real early, but we just had to rise up, keep our pride and keep driving on to the finish,” Lindsey said. “Coach said I’ve got to be the man, so that’s what I did.”
Often playing quarterback in Greer’s spread-option attack, Lindsey sparked what had been a lethargic offense in the early going.
It didn’t help that the Yellow Jackets started the game at their 2-yard-line after a bouncing kickoff and solid coverage pinned them deep. Clinton forced Greer three-and-out and took a 7-0 lead on a 10-yard run by Shakeam Dowdy.
The Red Devils stretched the lead early in the second quarter when quarterback Jay Fuller passed to Dee Jennings for a 55-yard score.
Led by Cole Henderson, Tiquan Lyles, Cedric Sullivan and others, Greer’s defense stiffened.
After forcing Clinton to punt on its first possession of the second half, Lindsey raced for a 26-yard score, and he led a 65-yard drive after another Clinton three-and-out, tying the score on a 31-yard reception from Mario Cusano.
Momentum had fully swung by the time Clinton was forced to punt for the third straight time in the second half. The punt snap sailed high and gave Greer possession inside Clinton’s 10-yard-line.
On third-and-goal from the 14, Cusano passed to Lindsey for what appeared to be a touchdown pass down the left sideline, but a holding penalty brought it back.
But Cusano passed to Lindsey againon third-and-goal from the 26, and Greer took control.
Lyles sacked Fuller in the end zone for a safety with about two minutes to play.
“Dorian is a special player and special kid, too,” Greer coach Will Young said. “He’s a great all-around role model for every student we’ve got at our school.”
