UNION – On fourth down and 20 to go as time expired Friday night at Union County Stadium, Mario Cusano hit a wide-open Zeccharia Glidden for a 41-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline to lift Greer High to a dramatic 28-22 win over the Union Yellow Jackets in a lightning-delayed, back-and-forth contest played mostly through rain.
Adrian McGee ran 27 times for 125 yards for Greer, and Cusano ran for 97 yards while completing 12 of 19 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns.
Greer improved to 3-0 while Union fell to 1-3.
Union led 12-3 in the second quarter after sophomore receiver Shi Smith broke four tackles to take a quick pass to the flat 47 yards for a touchdown.
Cusano hit Greer’s do-it-all Dorian Lindsey to pull to within 12-10 before halftime, and then Lindsey capped a 56-yard drive on the opening possession of the third quarter with a 3-yard dive that put Greer up 16-12.
Late in the third quarter Lindsey put Greer up 22-12 with a 6-yard run, but Union came storming back, again on the power and speed of Smith.
After Blake Berry hit a 32-yard field goal to pull Union to 22-15, Union coach Steve Taneyhill gambled on fourth-and-2 at Union’s own 31-yard-line, and Smith raced 69 yards down the left sideline for a score after colliding with another Union player in the backfield.
Greer’s Andrew Messer missed a long go-ahead field goal with less than two minutes to play, but that set up Greer’s defense to lay the groundwork for the offense’s late heroics.
