Alec Eschholz tipped in the game-winning shot with nine seconds remaining to lift Mount Mansfield to a 43-42 win over Rice on Thursday night in high school boys basketball.
Eschholz’s winner capped off a back-and-forth game that saw the Cougars up by as many as seven in the fourth quarter, and Rice in front by three with two minutes remaining.
Tinga Adiang led Mount Mansfield (15-4) with 16 points, Kyle Adams had 11 points and Eschholz finished with 10.
Ben Shungu led all scorers with 18 points for the Green Knights (15-4) and Tommy Fitzgerald added nine points.
* North Country 69, South Burlington 62: Tyler Jenne scored 18 of his 21 points from behind the 3-point arc to lead North Country past visiting South Burlington.
Colin Myrick also had 21 points for the Falcons (7-13), while Matthew Duncan and Rejean Robarge each scored 10 points.
Bryant Hinchcliffe had 17 points to lead South Burlington (9-11) and Jeremy Clements added 12 points.
* U-32 48, Harwood 38: Chris Collins hd 17 points to help U-32 grab a win over host Harwood.
Brad Meadow added 16 points for U-32, which moved to 15-4.
Riley Abair had nine points for the Highlanders (7-12).
The defending champion Champlain Valley Union Nordic ski teams each held down the top spots in Division I after Day 1 of this year’s state championships at Rikert Nordic Center, while Woodstock’s boys and girls held similar leads in Division II.
The CVU boys (39 points) held a 12-point edge over second-place Mount Anthony, with Essex (100) rounding out the top three in Division I. Woodstock was trailed by U-32 (53) and Harwood (79).
On the girls side, CVU (33), Mount Mansfield (46) and Mount Anthony (110) led Division I, while Woodstock (32), U-32 (47) and Harwood (85) paced Division II.
The competition concludes Tuesday at Mountain Top in Chittenden.
