Hamburg Returns Experienced Group

DEPEW, N.Y. – Expectations are high for Hamburg High School football. The Bulldogs return a huge group of starters from 2013. This head coach Pat Cauley is preparing for a tough season ahead.

“We’re very excited we have 16 starters returning, we have a lot of experienced, quality young men. We’ve got one heck of a tough schedule starting with a very tough game against Lakeshore that we know is going to be a real battle. We’re very excited about the opportunities in front of us,” Pat Cauley said at the Ad Pro Kensington Lions Club All Star Game.

Hamburg ended 2013 at 4-5 overall on the season. In order for the Bulldogs to improve on last year, Coach Cauley points out a few key players who need to lead the team.

“We have several All-League performers and I guess we would start with Joe Degrood. He’s the anchor of our offense and defensive lines, our most experienced player. Our quarterback Alex Suchan is a senior who got a great deal of experience last year. Brendan Ryan, he’ll be a junior but that was our top receiver and one of our top play makers from a year ago,” Coach Cauley said.

The Bulldogs return eight starters on both offense and defense. Given the even level of experience returning on both sides of the ball, Coach Cauley doesn’t give the edge to one unit over the other right now.

“Well that’s tough to say, I’m the defensive coach so I’d like to say defense but we’ve got a long way to go on both. Again we’ve got excellent opponents and we’ve got great respect for them. We’re looking forward to playing the ball games,” Coach Cauley explained.

Looking at the schedule, Hamburg has its rivalry game just like most teams do and Coach Cauley points out the toughness in that game.

“Hamburg/Frontier, they’re one heck of a team. They’re well coached, big, and physical but our guys get real juiced up for that one but that’s way down the road. We’ve got the Class A South and everybody’s tough there,” Coach Cauley said.
