MELBOURNE – A flock of birds flew over the field during the national anthem of Friday night’s game between Viera and Eau Gallie.
The Hawks flew on the field for their second district win of the season.
Viera defeated Eau Gallie 42-0 on the road behind four first-half touchdown passes by quarterback Hayden Kingston.
“We had a ton of time. The offensive line played probably the best game tonight all-around,” Kingston said. “When you have four great receivers, all you have to do is give them the ball and they do the rest.”
The game’s opening kickoff was a line drive and returned 90 yards for a touchdown by Tre Nixon for Viera (5-0, 2-0 Class 7A, District 12). The Nixon brothers, Tre and Devin, each scored two touchdowns and had big plays through the air of more than 50 yards.
Kingston, who had 187 yards and four touchdowns on six completions, led an efficient passing attack during the first half with the Nixon duo.
“We knew what was at stake with the big district game. We knew if we got this one it’s one step closer to the playoffs,” Kingston added.
The Hawks built a 42-point lead at halftime and the Commodores (3-3, 0-2) had no answer.
Viera got its revenge after losing to Eau Gallie last season, which kept the Hawks out of the playoffs.
“We came in wanting to make up for last year. The kids were hungry,” Viera coach Kevin Mays said. “We have to get ready to do the same thing we did here.”
The Hawks will play at Atlantic, while the Commodores have a bye next week.
