The Carmel High baseball team got an RBI single from Carter Hayes in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat visiting Stevenson 8-7 on Monday afternoon.

With the win, the Padres kept pace with rival Pacific Grove in the standings, as they improved to 15-9 overall and 12-3 in the Mission Trail Athletic League.

Joe Bifano got to third in the eighth when Hayes delivered the heroics. Bifano scored four times and had a hit in the game.

Kenny Nava, Bryson Lino and John Stivers each had two hits for Carmel, which moved to 3-1 in its past four games.

The game went into extra innings because of Galen Manhard’s one-out home run in the seventh inning that pulled Stevenson even at 7-7.

Brad Powers hit a home run in the third inning for Stevenson and finished the game 2-for-3. Nick Chancellor was 2-for-5.

Carmel goes to Pacific Grove on Wednesday, while Stevenson (12-9, 8-7 MTAL) faces Greenfield on Friday.

Pacific Grove 8, Greenfield 0: At Greenfield, the Breakers kept their two-game lead in the MTAL solid with a shutout of the Bruins.

Nick Boatman went the first five innings and was the winning pitcher for Pacific Grove (18-3, 13-1 MTAL). Casey Takasaki went the final two innings to seal the shutout.

Chris Fife was 2-for-4, James Donlan was 2-for-5 and Dan Harrington went 2-for-3.

Greenfield’s Aaron Ruiz and J.J. Rodriguez each had a hit.

Softball

Aptos 10, Monterey 2: At Aptos, the Toreadores lost their final regular season nonleague contest.

A grand slam by Aptos broke the game open as Monterey dropped to 13-8 overall.

The Toreadores return to MBL Pacific Division action Wednesday at Monte Vista Christian.

College softball

CSUMB: The Otters will host one of two NCAA Division II West Regional tournaments beginning Thursday afternoon.

CSUMB is the No. 1 seed overall in the West and will face Western Oregon at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The four-team pod is a double-elimination tournament. On the other side is Cal Baptist and Sonoma State.

The winner of the regional will advance to next week’s Super Regionals.

College golf

CSUMB: The Otters are in first place after the first round of the NCAA Division II West-South Central Regional at the Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin, Texas.

CSUMB finished with a team score of 288, three shots better than St. Edwards. Chico State is third at 293.

Individually, Brandon Hortt is tied for first with a 3-under 69. He and Ray Richards (72, seventh) are the only CSUMB golfers in the top 10. Dylan Jackson shot a 1-over 73 to finish tied for 13th.

The second round takes place today.
