WASHINGTON (WUSA 9) — During halftime at Saturday’s game, H.D. Woodson honored legendary coach Bob Headen by dedicating the school’s stadium to him.
Coach Headen has won six city titles during his coaching career and is considered one of the Deans of DC Public School football.
“It’s a dream that almost all coaches have, to have something named after them” Headen said. “I’m just so glad that I’m alive to see this happen.”
Headen’s former players surrounded him on the field as H.D. Woodson made the dedication announcement.
He said when he got into coaching, all he wanted to do was coach kids and help them get into school.
“I had that opportunity and I wanted my kids to have the same thing,” Headen said.
During the dedication ceremony, H.D. Woodson revealed the school’s new scoreboard. The bottom of the scoreboard now reads “In Honor of Coach Bob Headen.”
When the construction workers called Headen to tell him his name was being put on the scoreboard, he said he jumped in the car to go get a picture of his name dedication.
“That will be there forever,” Headen said. “That’s something I’m really going to appreciate.”
He said it’s a pleasure to see his name on the scoreboard and he’s glad the school thought of him.
Headen said seeing his former players progress and having a stadium dedicated to him completes his career.
