Hailey Ferguson had something to prove to herself as much as anyone else.
Three of Ferguson’s events come in quick succession, and the Heath junior wanted to prove she could ace all three. She certainly did as she helped the Bulldogs qualify to Lexington in each of them.
Ferguson will represent the Bulldogs in the 400. She ran a season-best 1:00.73 minutes after competing in the 400 relay.
“It feels really awesome because last year I did the same thing, back-to-back (400 relay) and 400 and I didn’t make it,” Ferguson said. “I came in sixth, so I am really happy I made it this year with third. It’s a big step up.”
Ferguson would like to crack the one-minute barrier this week. She set a personal best of 59.5 in 2013, and the school record is well within reach.
“I’m really pumped because I keep dropping my times,” Ferguson said. “Hopefully another race, drop another second. I’m going for the 400 record at the school, it’s a 59.2. I’m really close.”
Heath will have much of its team at Lexington after winning a closely-contested district. Like in Division III, the Central District had just one Division II meet, so the Bulldogs finished ahead of 20 other scoring teams.
Ferguson is joined by Kayla Carmichael, Claudia Allen and Abby Wilhelm in both the 400 and 800 relays.
“I’m really confident,” she said. “The time we ran in (800 relay) wasn’t even our best. We are still moving up.”
