It looked as if the game was going to slip from Robert E. Lee’s grasp, but clutch shooting from sophomore guard Tykeria Williams led the Generals past Jeff Davis 82-75 in overtime Tuesday.
“(Williams) really stepped up,” Lee coach Freeah Smith said. “Last game against JD, she felt like she didn’t play well. So I was so excited for her to be the hero tonight.”
Williams scored 15 points in the teams’ last meeting. After the Generals’ star player, UAB commit T’erra Lewis, fouled out late in regulation, the burden shifted to Williams to carry the Lee offense.
Williams stepped up — or stepped back, rather — and hit a 26-foot 3-pointer to break the 69-69 tie in overtime. She finished with 35 points, seven in overtime.
“There was nobody open, and I knew I could take the shot. That’s in my shooting range, so I just took it,” Williams said. “We started turning the ball over a lot, but I saw that I had to step up because two starters had fouled out. So it was all up to me.”
After a back-and-forth first half, the Generals (11-7, 3-1 Class 6A, Area 6) led 36-32 at the break. A strong third quarter gave Lee a 13-point advantage heading into the final period. Then a 16-8 Jeff Davis run cut the deficit to five with three minutes remaining. The Vols earned an 11-6 advantage down the stretch to force overtime.
Lewis scored 28 for the Generals and Tia Thicklin added 10 points.
Jasmine Walker led Jeff Davis (16-5, 3-1) with 24 points. Kayla Jackson added 18 points and Ahyiona Vason scored 16. Brandi Shelton chipped in 10 points.
Both teams continue area play Friday. The Generals host Sidney Lanier, and Jeff Davis traveling to G.W. Carver.
“It feels good. Now we’re tied for first place (in the area),” Williams said. “So once we get them again, we’re in first place.”
