St. Xavier got layups off back-to-back steals in overtime and held on for a 54-52 boys’ basketball victory over host Fairdale on Thursday night. The Tigers (14-3) are 5-0 in overtime games this season.
Ashanti Burgess had 17 points, including all three of St. X’s 3-pointers, to lead the winners. Robert Shaw added 12 points and five assists for the Tigers, who dominated the boards 46-28.
“We got some huge defensive contributions from Austin Chambers with nine deflections, and Malik Carr had 11 rebounds off the bench,” coach Kevin Klein said.
The Bulldogs (7-10) missed a free throw with 11 seconds left in regulation, and St. X missed a final shot. Each team shot only 33 percent for the game.
Cory Thomas led Fairdale with 20 points.
