High school notebook: Panther Classic tips off Friday at Pleasure Ridge Park

The Pleasure Ridge Park High School boys’ basketball team will host the Republic Bank Panther Classic on Friday and Saturday.

The Panthers, No. 2 in The Courier-Journal’s preseason coaches’ poll, and No. 14 Doss highlight the eight-team field.

Here is the schedule:

* Butler vs. Allen County-Scottsville, 6 p.m.; Pleasure Ridge Park vs. Union County, 7:30Friday:

* Moore vs. Manual, 4:30 p.m.; Doss vs. Pulaski Southwestern, 6; Pleasure Ridge Park vs. Allen County-Scottsville, 7:30Saturday:

Other basketball events

* The Kentucky Country Day and Spencer County boys’ teams will play in the North American Stainless Tournament at Carroll County, starting Thursday and running through Saturday’s 8:15 p.m. championship game.

* The Southern and North Bullitt boys’ teams will compete in the National Guard Holiday Classic Thursday through Saturday’s 8 p.m. final.

* The Holy Cross, South Oldham and Whitefield Academy boys’ teams are entered in the Lindsey Wilson College Holiday Classic at Adair County. The tournament will start Thursday and conclude with Saturday’s 5 p.m. final.

* The Bullitt Central and Bullitt East girls’ teams will play in the Centria Metals/Staxx BBQ New Year’s Shootout at Franklin County on Saturday. Bullitt Central will face Garrard County at 10 a.m., and Bullitt East will play Bryan Station at 8:30 p.m.

* Several of the state’s top boys’ and girls’ teams will play in the inaugural Bluegrass Cellular New Year’s Classic at Central Hardin. Here is the schedule:

Assumption volleyball team finishes No. 6 in nation

The state champion Assumption volleyball team is No. 6 in the final PrepVolleyball.com Century Club national rankings. Other Kentucky teams in the rankings are No. 7 Mercy, No. 46 Notre Dame and No. 59 Sacred Heart. St. James of Lenexa, Kan., finished No. 1.

Wednesday girls’ basketball

* The Sacred Heart basketball team took third place Wednesday in the Naples Daily News Tournament in Naples, Fla.Sacred Heart 56, Barron Collier (Fla.) 49:

Raven Merriweather had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Valkyries (6-3), hitting 7 of 12 shots.

DaiJia Ruffin added 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists for Sacred Heart .
