High school Q&A: Spencer County's Mackenzie Myers

Mackenzie Myers is Spencer County’s all-time leader in scoring (1,596 points) and rebounding (1,061). Going into Friday night’s home game against Shelby County, the 5-foot-10 senior is averaging 18.4 points and 11.2 rebounds for a 4-12 team. She had season-high totals of 34 points against North Laurel and 28 rebounds against Presentation. She plays AAU ball in the spring for the Lady Tigers, also coached by Spencer County’s David Marion.

How was it to play on the varsity as a seventh-grader?

It was nerve-wracking because I had a pretty good role at a young age. I started three games that year and became a regular starter in the eighth grade. It seems like I’ve been here forever, but it’s helped me because we have a young team and I know where they’re coming from.

Was the North Laurel game your best this season?

Yes, because I had the ball down low (near the basket) a lot. We played well as a team. We communicated better as a team and got the ball upcourt more (with the young guards).

You visited St. Catharine two days ago. What other colleges are you considering?

I’m going to visit Campbellsville on Saturday. I’ve already visited Union, Spalding, Georgetown and Morehead State. I want to major in education and become a teacher, something toward biology. I love kids a lot, and I like to help others.

What has been your most enjoyable time while playing at Spencer County?

I really like having my sister playing on the JV team this season. I was always the youngest girl on the team. Now I’m the oldest, and I like becoming more of a leader.

What Christmas present did you like the most?

My Apple Mac computer. It’s been very helpful.

How do you relax and get away from school and basketball?

I babysit a lot. I like to draw and I’m pretty serious about art. I draw characters from Disney World. I’ve been there twice and really loved it. I love to watch “The Walking Dead” on TV, and my favorite movie is “The Little Mermaid.”

Mackenzie’s sister, Abby Myers, 13, is on the JV basketball team at Spencer County. She also has a brother, Bradley Myers, 6. “Mackenzie is a big, strong girl who has a great desire to play basketball. When I got here two years ago, she was only an inside player, but she has worked hard to improve her outside game. She hit two 3-point shots as a sophomore and 34 as a junior. She has 13 threes this winter. Her teammates look up to her because we start a seventh- and eighth-grader. Our players always try to feed her the ball, sometimes to a fault.”School:Year:Sport:Student-athlete:Family: Coach David Marion:
