High School Roundup: 3 from Section 4 win at Deposit wrestling tournament

A trio of Section 4 wrestlers placed first at the 33rd annual Stan Elinsky Tournament on Saturday at Deposit.

Deposit-Hancock’s Dean Raymond captured the title at 99 pounds, teammate Trevor Stiles placed first at 126 pounds, and Newark Valley’s Trevor Hoffmier won at 145 pounds.

Raymond placed first by a 6-4 decision over Wyoming Seminary Prep’s Will Moss, Stiles recorded a 7-3 decision over Cornwall’s Ryan Vizethann, while Hoffmier recorded a 4-0 decision over Duanesburg’s Andy Mollevik in the championship matches.

Host Deposit-Hancock placed third overall with 194.50 points and Newark Valley placed fifth out of 13 teams with 140.0 points. Wyoming Seminary Prep won the event with 321.5 points.

Other Section 4 team results: Candor placed seventh, Oxford eight, Sidney 11th, Marathon 12th, and Binghamton 13th.

Saratoga Invitational: Windsor’s Dave McKee placed first at 195 pounds and the Black Knights placed fourth overall. Other top Windsor performances were by Noah Zakrajsek, who placed second at 160 pounds, and Austin Orshal who was second at 182.

Odessa-Montour Duals: Sheldon Clute (145 pounds) and Jordon Torbitt (170) scored pinfall victories, but Whitney Point fell to Horseheads in the championship match. Both teams had 5-1 records at the event.

Boys basketball

Norwich 64, Chenango Valley 40: At Norwich, Michael Sutton scored 18 points and dished out six assists, leading Norwich in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference game.

Zan Stewart scored 10 points and Colin Stewart added nine off the bench for the Purple Tornado (7-0), which held the Warriors without a field goal in the first quarter.

Brian Ball scored nine points to lead CV (5-3).

Tioga 57, Thomas A. Edison 54: At Elmira Heights, John Dougherty led all scorers with 21 points as Tioga won its first game of the season with the Interscholastic Athletic Conference victory.

Josh Kithcart added nine for the Tigers (1-5), who went 9-for-16 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

Kevin Harmer scored a team-high 15 points for Edison (1-8).

Girls basketball

Tioga 58, Thomas A. Edison 28: At Tioga, Kaitlyn Stubbs had a game-high 20 points as Tioga routed Edison in an IAC win.

Taylor Ayres added 10 points for the Tigers (3-4), who led 28-12 at halftime.

Katelyn Warren scored 16 points to lead the Spartans (0-7).

Dryden 52, Newark Valley 31: At Dryden, Eric Daley scored 14 points and Kate Holland added 11 to lead Dryden to a victory in the first round of the Lady Lions Holiday Tournament at Dryden High School. Hannah Luszczek scored seven points to lead Newark Valley, which trailed 24-13 at halftime.

Indoor Track and Field

Hispanic Games: At the New York City Armory, Vestal’s Kari Stromhaug tied a Section 4 record in winning the pole vault at the Hispanic Games.

Stromhaug vaulted 11 feet, 9 inches, which tied the section record, according to Jim Cerra, the Vestal track coach.

Vestal’s Mike Egotanda won the long jump and placed second in the triple jump.

Egotanda’s jump of 23 feet, 8¼ inches was tops among 70 competitors. His triple jump of 44 feet, 3¼ inches placed him second out of 45, with the winner jumping 45-11¼.

Norwich’s Matt Murray was ninth in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 49.92 seconds.

Hockey

Maine-Endwell 5, Union-Endicott 3: At SUNY Broome, Colin Wenzel scored twice, including the go-ahead goal with 10:29 remaining, helping M-E win a Broome County High School Hockey Association contest.

Jeremy Wilber sent a shot on net and Wenzel scored off a scramble in front to give M-E a 4-3 lead. Wilber scored an unassisted goal with 4:28 left.

Dylan Konecny scored twice for U-E, including a goal with 1:10 left in the second period that tied that game at 3.
