High School Roundup: Deposit/Hancock takes MAC wrestling title


Walton’s Dylan Wood was named the most outstanding wrestler at the Midstate Athletic Conference tournament in Deposit on Saturday.

Deposit/Hancock won the team event with 214 points, followed by Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville with 197, Sidney with 120½ and Oxford with 108½.

Wood scored pinfall victories over Unadilla Valley’s Brandon Brown and D/H’s Trevor Stiles before pinning Unatego’s Austin Ryan in the finals of the 126-pound weight class.

At 99 pounds, D/H’s Dean Raymond, the reigning Section 4 Division 2 champion, as well as last year’s MAC champ, also scored a trio of pinfall wins, with the last one coming against teammate Devin Todd in the finals.

D/H’s Dan Babcock repeated as MAC heavyweight champion, scoring pinfall victories over BGAH’s Shane Curtain in the semifinals and UV’s Richie Conklin in the final.

Oxford’s Nik Hansen pinned Sidney’s Nick Jump to win at 160 pounds. Hansen was among four Blackhawk winners.

A pair of champions from last year fell in the finals this time around. D/H’s Stephen McKee lost a 9-0 major decision to BGAH’s Chris Cirigliano at 106 pounds and D/H’s Brandon Macumber was pinned by Oxford’s Joe Nelson in the final of the 113-pound bout.


Waverly sweeps IAC titles: At Valley Bowling Center in Waverly, the host Wolverines won the boys and girls team titles at the Interscholastic Athletic Conference Championship.

Waverly edged Elmira Notre Dame 3,052-3,049 in the boys competition.

The Crusaders Alex Sherman won the individual crown with an 831 series, highlighted by a 298 game. His teammate, Matt Dieg, was third at 699.

Waverly’s depth made the difference, as Mason Beard rolled 637, Conner Joseph 631, Cameron Lunn 637 and Trevor Campbell 619.

Zach Braster led Edison with a 642.

Meanwhile, the Waverly girls dominated with 3,238 pins, followed by Watkins Glen with 2,541.

The Wolverines swept the top three individual spots behind Allyson Stewart (699), Brooke Rosh (686) and Erin Fagan (684).

Cassie Berry led Notre Dame with a 577. Dakota Evans paced Watkins Glen with a 577. And Molleigh Malanoski topped Edison with a 575.

Boys basketball

Harpursville 44, Sidney 38: At Harpursville, the Hornets went 14-for-14 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to hold off Sidney in Midstate Athletic Conference play. Colton West and Jon Andrews scored 15 points each and Harpursville went 19-for-22 from the line overall.

Bill Kozak hit five 3-pointers to lead Sidney with 15 points.

Ross Corners 59, North Rome 40: At Ross Corners, Pavel Shindyakove scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Jarrod Yee also scored 21, leading the hosts to victory in a NY-PENN Christian Athletic Conference game.

Noah Kiekel added four points and nine rebounds for the Rams (14-3, 7-1 in NY-PENN).

Ben Haefke scored 12 points to lead North Rome.

Girls basketball

North Rome 36, Ross Corners 32: At Ross Corners, Shea Millard and Ally Cargill scored 10 points apiece, but the hosts (3-11) fell in the NY-PENN Christian Athletic Conference contest.

Cali Jennings scored 12 points to lead North Rome.
