High School Roundup: Dryden tops T-burg in baseball

Dryden’s John Whitmore pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out nine, helping Dryden beat host Trumansburg, 3-0, on Friday afternoon in an Interscholastic Athletic Conference baseball game.

Jeff Cotterill pitched a complete game for Trumbansburg (2-1), but took the loss.

Dryden 28-23, Groton 0-0: Thursday at Dryden, the Purple Lions opened their IAC season with a doubleheader sweep of the Indians, by scores of 28-0 (5 innings) and 23-0.

The second game was called with Dryden batting in the top of the third inning; Groton played as the home team in the nightcap.

Alan Davis and Jace McGrath combined on a no-hitter for Dryden in Game 1, Davis working the first three innings and striking out six, McGrath finishing up the last two and fanning four. A 13-run second inning made the score 19-0.

In the nightcap, the Purple Lions had put nine runs on the board in the third inning when the game was called. McGrath got the victory, working two hitless innings.

Tioga 16, Candor 0: Thursday at Tioga, Peter Simmons and Jesse Manuel combined to strike out 10 batters and allow only one hit as Tioga scored the victory.

Adam Layman went 3-for-3 with two doubles, scoring three runs and adding three RBIs.

Notre Dame 11, Watkins Glen 3: Thursday at Notre Dame, the Crusaders drew eight walks and stole 10 bases to improve to 4-0 with an Interscholastic Athletic Conference victory over Watkins Glen.

Kyle Minchin’s squeeze bunt drove in Joe Prunier in the second inning to break a 3-3 tie.

Derek Marshall singled and drove in two runs for Notre Dame.

The game was called after six innings because of darkness.

Boys lacrosse

Corning 11, Ithaca 4: Thursday at Corning, the Hawks outscored Ithaca 7-2 in the second half in Section 4 boys lacrosse action,

The loss dropped Ithaca to 3-4 on the season; the Hawks improved to 4-2.

Spencer Passmore led the winners with four goals and an assist, while teammate Andrew Buck added a hat trick and goalie Nick Nehring made 15 saves.

For Ithaca, Zack Johnson scored a pair of goals, while Charlie Estill and Kyle Poe both had one. Goalie Matt Fricke made 12 saves.

Ithaca hosts Irondequoit from Section 5 at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Moresco Stadium.

Whitney Point 18, Dryden 6: At Whitney Point, the Golden Eagles pulled away in the second half, outscoring Dryden 12-3 to score the Section 4 victory.

Ross Cole and Eric Dardia had two goals apiece for the Purple Lions.

Jake Lynch had four goals and four assists, Dylan Eldridge also had four goals and Drew Gardner made 10 saves in goal for Whitney Point (5-1).

IAC softball

Tioga 16, Candor 1: At Tioga, Sam Wood pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts and Brittany Vergason went 4-for-4 with four runs and four RBIs as Tioga (2-0) cruised.

IAC golf

Marathon 222, Dryden 228, Moravia 242: Senior Jonathan Becker carded a 3-over 38 to grab medalist honors for the Purple Lions (2-1) in the double-dual match.

Cody Morrison led Marathon (2-0) with a 41, while Moravia (0-2) was paced by Jake Wells, who also carded a 41.
