High School Roundup: Elmira romps in softball


Elmira ran wild on the bases Thursday, going on to defeat Ithaca 13-0 in Southern Tier Athletic Conference West softball at Elmira Free Academy.

The Express (6-5) stole 11 bases and got shutout pitching from Makena Edwards and Danielle Dille. Edwards allowed just one hit over six innings and struck out three.

Elmira backed up the pitching with errorless ball.

“We had a good day defensively,” Elmira coach Jeff Edwards said.

Abbie Topping and Emily Saltsman had two hits apiece for the Express.

Topping tripled, walked twice, stole four bases, drove in two runs and scored twice. Saltsman contributed three RBIs and two steals.

Katie Snyder doubled and stole two bases.

The Express will return to EFA on Friday for a STAC doubleheader against Binghamton. The first game starts at 3:45 p.m.

Tioga 15, Odessa-Montour 0: At Tioga, Madison Lodge threw a no-hitter for the Tigers in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference game.

Boys lacrosse

Elmira Notre Dame 15, Owego 10: At Owego, Jonas McCaig and Brandon Majahan collected six goals and three assists each to lead the Crusaders in the Section 4 Lacrosse League match.

Notre Dame (4-8) got a goal each from Will Pochal, Jack Chapman and Alex Frisbe. Zach Gustin and Will Brennan combined to make 18 saves.

Corning 17, Horseheads 3: Wednesday at Corning, Spencer Passmore had five goals and an assist for the Hawks.

Kyle Grimaldi added three goals and three assists.

For Horseheads, Luke Tetreault, Tyler Wascher and Caleb Strope each scored a goal. Chris Bucciarelli made five saves.

Girls lacrosse

Corning 14, Horseheads 2: At Corning Memorial Stadium, Neena Merola and Taylor Mathis scored five goals apiece for the Hawks in the Section 4 contest.

Sara Grapevine and Stephanie Allen added two goals each. Sara Shadduck turned away 12 shots for Corning (9-3).

Abbey Benesh and Tatum Benesh each had a goal for Horseheads. Danielle Sherman made six saves.

Chenango Forks 19, Elmira 5: At Elmira Free Academy, Sierra Torillo scored nine goals for Chenango Forks.

Jordynn Kurcoba led Elmira with two goals. The Express got one each from Sahriah Waters, Mariah Cogswell and Sam Schrom.

Elmira goalie Alexis Bower made 18 saves.


Tioga 11, Odessa-Montour 2: At Tioga, the Tigers improved to 9-0 by limiting O-M to three hits in IAC action.


Douglas site change: The 30th George Douglas Memorial Junior Golf Invitational, scheduled for Sunday, has been moved from Corning Country Club to Willowcreek Golf Club in Big Flats.

Corning Country Club has suffered winter damage on several greens, explained Jon Wilbur, director of First Tee of Corning.
