Greene’s Christian Dietrich and Lansing’s William Koll captured individual titles Saturday at the prestigious Eastern States Classic wrestling tournament at Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake.
Dietrich prevailed in the 182-pound weight class and Koll in the 132 weight class in the two-day tournament that featured 132 teams from six states.
The top-seeded Dietrich, a runner-up last year, defeated South Jefferson’s Dan Smith, 3-0, in the championship match. The Greene sophomore won six matches, including his first three by pin, en route to the championship.
Koll won the 132 title with a 7-5 decision over Hauppauge’s Chris Mauriello. Koll was the top seed in his weight class.
Johnson City’s Reggie Williams and Norwich’s Tristan Rifanburg, both individual champions last year, finished second and third in their respective weight classes.
Williams lost in the 195 final to Shenendehowa’s Levi Ashley, 9-4. Rifanburg, who was upset in the 138 quarterfinals, defeated North Rockland’s Matt Caputo by a 2-0 decision in the third-place match.
Also placing third was Newark Valley’s Derek Holcomb at 160. Fifth-place finishers were NV’s Trevor Hoffmier (145 pounds), Ithaca’s Richie Burke (126), and Norwich’s Frank Garcia (152), while Deposit-Hancock’s Dan Babcock (285) and Johnson City’s Zach Colgan (160) both finished sixth and D-H’s Dean Raymond (99) finished seventh.
Norwich 75, Susquehanna Valley 51: At Norwich, Carlos Ithier led all scorers with 17 points to help the Purple Tornado win the Tom Schwan Tournament. Michael Sutton added 11 points and 10 assists, and Storm Cook scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Norwich (8-0), which is ranked ninth in the state in Class B.
Jason Fiorentino scored 13 points while Dave Matthews added 11 to lead SV. Sutton was named the tournament MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team with teammates Cook and Michael Oralls, and SV’s Fiorentino and Matthews.
Newark Valley 63, Candor 60: At Candor, Blake Novi hit a winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Cardinals an Interscholastic Athletic Conference victory. Novi finished with 14 points.
James Thompkins scored 19 points, and Wyatt Whitmore added 16 for Candor (3-4), which missed a potential winning baseline floater with about 30 seconds left with the game tied at 60.
Newark Valley’s Brett Copes led all scorers with 21 points.
Union-Endicott 52, Corning 35: At U-E, Nicole Kaczmarczyk posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Tigers to a Southern Tier Athletic Conference victory. Victoria Mattarell added 10 points and Alexis Eastman contributed nine for U-E (5-4), which held the visitors to five points in the second quarter and six in the third.
Lauren Fie scored 12 points to lead Corning (3-5).
Binghamton 4, Union-Endicott 1: At SUNY Broome, Timmy O’Shea, Tyesn Gates, Jesse Griffiths and Sean Marean all scored for Patriots in a Broome County High School Hockey Association game. David Roberts made 30 saves for Binghamton, which outshot its opponent 43-31.
Zach Schappert scored and Owen Miller made 39 saves for U-E.
