High School Roundup: Hodack leads Maine-Endwell in hockey playoffs

Ben Hodack had a hat trick for Maine-Endwell, leading the Spartans to an 8-2 rout of Binghamton in the second round of the Broome County High School Hockey Association playoffs at the SUNY Broome Ice Center in Dickinson.

Maine-Endwell (16-3-1) got off to a 2-0 lead after the first period before exploding in the second, notching four goals. Binghamton amassed two tallies in the middle frame as well, but allowed another pair in the third to finish. For the Spartans, a balanced effort took the day.

Colin Wenzel added two goals, Corey McVannan had another, and M-E got three assists each from Jeremy Wilber and A.J. Reynolds. Kyle Balmer had a goal and two assists, Brendan Dyer had a goal and an assist, and Chris McVannan earned the win with 24 stops.

For the Patriots, Matt Evans scored both goals while Luke Miller, Nick Conrow, Cameron Dunn, and Jesse Griffiths each tallied an assist. David Roberts made 27 saves in defeat.

Binghamton plays next on Saturday against Chenango Forks while Maine-Endwell plays next Thursday against Vestal in the double-elimination tournament.

Swimming

The Section 4 Diving Finals, originally scheduled for 11 a.m. this morning at Waverly, have been pushed back to a 2 p.m. start time.

The swimming finals will be Saturday at Owego Free Academy, with Class C at 9 a.m., Class A at 1 p.m. and Class B at 5.

Wrestling

Binghamton University to host Section 4 meet: The Section 4 championships will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Binghamton University Events Center, a switch from the meet’s traditional home at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

Wrestling starts at noon Saturday and 12:30 p.m. Sunday, with the championship finals scheduled for 5.

Indoor track

State qualifier Saturday: The Section 4 state qualifier will be held Saturday at Cornell University’s Barton Hall, starting at 9 a.m.

The state meet will be held at Cornell on March 1.

Bowling

State qualifiers at Waverly: Valley Bowling Center in Waverly will host Section 4 state qualifiers Friday and Saturday, with 9 a.m. starts each day. The boys compete Friday and the girls Saturday.
