High school roundup: Howard tosses 1-hitter to lead Lacey softball to win


Chelsea Howard took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before it was broken up, and she finished with 12 strikeouts and no walks as Lacey (12-8) scored a 1-0 victory over nondivisional foe Manchester (8-10).

In the fifth, Kayla Kohout led off with a walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kristen Santoro and scored on a double to left-center by Emily Dezendorf, who had three hits, for the only run of the game.

MIDDLETOWN SOUTH 2, RARITAN 0: Maddie McMahon struck out 14 and walked none while tossing a three-hitter, and Grace Heller bashed a two-run homer in the third inning to account for all the scoring as the Eagles (12-8) grabbed the nondivisional victory over the Rockets (13-8). Nicole Coppolino gave up five hits and fanned seven for Raritan.

KEANSBURG 3, NEPTUNE 1: Aimee Ascolese singled to bring in a run to tie the contest before Allison Florenzo brought in the game-winner with a groundout and Cheyenne Lyons, who was 2-for-2, added an insurance run with a single in the fifth as the Titans (10-7) scored the nondivisional victory. Bobbie Burdick allowed one hit and struck out seven for the win in the circle. Stephanie Walters ended up 2-for-3.


RUMSON-FH 3, MANASQUAN 2: David Weltz won his match at first singles to lead the Bulldogs over the Warriors in a Central II quarterfinal match. John Duddy also secured a point at second singles for the Bulldogs after he defeated Tristan Ogden 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Jeff Sansone completed the sweep for all three singles positions for the Bulldogs after clinching a point at third singles. Jack Fay and Like Tausek won their match at first doubles for the Warriors by defeating Connor Kelly and Murray McHeffey 7-6 (2), 6-2.


MIDD. SOUTH 5, RB CATHOLIC 3: The Eagles (10-10) rebounded from an 11th-inning loss to Colts Neck in the Monmouth County Tournament semifinals on Monday night with their first victory over the Caseys (16-5) in three years.

Joe Timmons finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI while Andrew Wisialko added to the Middletown South effort with two runs scored as part of his 1-for-2 day. Dan Mishlen (1-3) allowed three runs on four hits while striking out two over five innings.

Mike Alescio finished went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored in the loss.

HOLMDEL 7, MATAWAN 6: The Hornets erased a five-run deficit with a seven-run seventh as Joe Sadler opened the rally with a leadoff double before D.J. Goins plated the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice and Tyler Fischer padded the lead with an RBI single to lead the Hornets (5-11) to a nondivisional victory over the Huskies (12-8).

Dylan Popin pitched a scoreless bottom half of the frame to secure the win.

Matawan’s Joe Piscopo was 3-for-4 in the loss.

TOMS RIVER NORTH 7, TOMS RIVER SOUTH 6: Joe Rose, who finished 4-for-4 with a grand slam, drilled a triple off the center-field fence in the sixth inning before scoring the eventual game-winning run on a Julian Feliz sacrifice fly as the Mariners (12-7, 9-5) edged the Indians (12-7, 8-6) in a Class A South game.

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP 7, MANALAPAN 3: Joe Decelie (2-2) threw a complete-game six-hitter, allowing one earned run and striking out eight, as the Patriots (15-5, 10-4) upended the Braves (10-12, 6-8) in a Class A North game.

Freehold Township’s Steve Derby finished 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a two-run single, while Kenny Carrier added to the Patriots’ output by hitting a three-run home run and scoring two runs.

OCEAN 4, BRICK MEM. 0: Dan Verderese (5-0) threw a complete-game shutout, scattering five hits, walking none and striking out seven as the Spartans (15-6) defeated the Mustangs (8-13) in a nondivisional game.
