HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Howell boys lacrosse pushes past Ocean


Sophomore Nic Rossi led Howell to an overtime Shore Conference Class A North victory over Ocean, scoring the game-winning goal 52 seconds into the first overtime period off a feed from junior Ryder Verdoni.

Junior Zack Ornstein finished with a game-high four goals and won 12 of 15 face-offs, including the first face-off in overtime to gain possession that led to the game-winning goal for the Rebels.

Junior Jake Sherman also netted two goals for the Rebels. Sophomore attacker Erik Rant finished with a team-high three goals for the Spartans, and Connor Daly also added two more.

WALL 15, LONG BRANCH 3: Kyle McDonough finished with three goals and three assists leading the Crimson Knights (6-1) over the Green Wave (0-8) in a Class A North game. Kyle Critchlow also added two goals and two assists for the Crimson Knights.

Terry Manning netted all three goals for the Green Wave.

BARNEGAT 14, BRICK 4: Ricky Gerena scored two of his team-high four goals in the fourth quarter leading the Bengals (6-0) over the Green Dragons (3-4) in a Class A South game. Ethan Tonnesen also finished the day with three goals and four assists for the Bengals.

Senior attacker David Kearns finished with three goals for the Dragons.

RED BANK 21, NEPTUNE 1: Senior midfielder Jake Smolokoff scored his 100th career goal with 10:59 left in the first quarter as the Bucs (7-2, 3-1) defeated the Scarlet Fliers (0-7, 0-5) in a Class A North game. Smolokoff finished with five goals and one assist and sophomore attackman Cole Smolokoff added five goals and two assists. Neptune sophomore midfielder Yuri Gerson had the team’s goal in the fourth quarter.

Girls lacrosse

LONG BRANCH 12, NEPTUNE 8: Lexi Meyer netted four goals leading the Green Wave over the Scarlet Fliers in a non-divisional game. Allie Conlon finished with three goals and Alyssa Soden added two more goals for the Green Wave. Ruby Liss also scored a goal along with two assists for Long Branch.

Lindsey Sanclementi finished with three goals and an assist for the Scarlet Fliers.

Boys volleyball

ST. JOHN VIANNEY 2, BARNEGAT 0: Junior setter Andrew Zimms’ 26 assists, three digs and two kills led the host Lancers (4-3) past the Bengals (6-3) in non-divisional action.

Sophomore middle blocker Brian Ross added six kills, two aces and two blocks. Freshman middle blocker Micah Clark contributed five kills. Sophomore opposite Mike McGimpsey added two blocks and three kills.

For Barnegat, Will Leamon notched six kills. Frank Buckley and Justin Kovacs added three kills each.

TOMS RIVER NORTH 2, LONG BRANCH 0: Nicolas Mercadante’s 14 kills and six aces propelled the host Mariners (6-4) past the Green Wave in non-divisional action.

Daniel Dellane added 19 assists. North’s Zachary Lynne hustled to 13 digs. Eric Ryan added eigtht kills and two aces.

Boys tennis

ST. ROSE 5, HENRY HUDSON 0: Colin McDermott won in straight sets at first singles, leading the Purple Roses (5-0) past the Admirals in Class B Central.

Mike Rafter and Dan Borner won at second and third singles, respectively.

WALL 5, NEPTUNE 0: The Crimson Knights (7-0, 6-0) blanked the Scarlet Fliers (1-4, 0-4) in Class B North.

Shane Jeffray, Conner Prasad and Triston Spennato won at first, second and third singles, respectively. Jake Evans and Sean Duncan and Chris McEwan and Donnie Corson prevailed at first and second doubles, respectively.
