High School roundup: Jake Sinicki leads M-E boys basketball to win


Jake Sinicki had 10 of his 19 points in the first half as Maine-Endwell’s boys basketball team beat Vestal 57-41 on Thursday night in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference game.

Maine-Endwell (10-4) used a late push in the second quarter, keyed by Kyle Gallagher’s 3-pointer, to take a five-point lead and turn it into a 31-22 edge at halftime. The lead was in double-figures for most of the second half until Vestal got within nine points midway through the fourth quarter, but no further.

Alec Wisniewski added 14 points for the Spartans. Kevin Franz had 20 points and Nick Wegmann scored 12 for Vestal (3-10).

Spencer-Van Etten 54, Odessa-Montour 28: At S-VE, Derek Carman led all scorers with 23 points as S-VE (7-7) cruised to an Interscholastic Athletic Conference victory. The Panthers man-to-man defense held the visitors to 12 first half points and forced turnovers that led to layups.

Girls basketball

Norwich 82, Chenango Forks 33: At CF, Mackenzie Maynard scored 17 points and Carin Kuhn tallied 11 as the Purple Tornado routed Forks in STAC play. Alex Yoest scored 18 points to lead the Blue Devils.

Horseheads 61, Corning 31: At Horseheads, Ellie Leszyk finished with 15 points, five steals and four assists to lead the Blue Raiders (13-2), who are ranked 19th in Class AA according to the New York Sportswriters Association.

Tioga 42, Marathon 38: At Tioga, Kaitlyn Stubbs scored 12 of her game-high 17 points in the first half as the Tigers (5-9) held on for the Interscholastic Athletic Conference win. Lexi Swagler added 11 points in addition to grabbing a season-high 15 rebounds.

Cassidy Marsh scored 11 points to pace Marathon.


Windsor 37, Norwich 36: At Norwich, Windsor won the last four matches to edge the Purple Tornado in the Section Four dual meet. Windsor’s Nate Hayes recorded a 14-2 major decision over Dustin marvin at 126 pounds and Gabe Zakrajsek pinned Marcus Dodd at 145 pounds to clinch the victory.


Chenango Forks 100, Chenango Valley 82: At CV, the Chenango Valley relay team of Cameron Auchinachie, Karl Grunder, Gannon Connors and Nick Schuldt set a school record in the 200-yard medley relay. Their time of 1:46.70 was one hundredth of a second quicker than the old record of 1:46.71 that was set last season.

Norwich 98, Holland Patent 69: At Norwich, the Purple Tornado won 10 of the 12 events in the non league meet that doubled as their senior night. It was the final home meet for seniors Nick Mooney, Greg Todd, Cutis Woodard and Caleb Miller.
