High school roundup: Kimble, Vriesema advance to state bowling tournament

Windsor’s Troy Kimble and Union-Endicott’s Jim Vriesema were among seven competitors who qualified for the boys state bowling tournament after their performances in the Section 4 State Qualifier on Friday at Valley Bowling Center in Waverly.

Kimble finished fifth among the 36 individuals, knocking down 1,373 pins in six games. Vriesema followed in sixth place with 1,366. Corning’s Connor LeBarron was the top individual finisher with 1,518 pins.

Also making the state tournament were Waverly’s Mason Beard (1,405 pins) and Connor Joseph (1,381), who finished second and third, respectively, Elmira Notre Dame’s Matt Diego (1,380), who finished fourth, and Ryan Piersimoni (1,361) of Horseheads, who was seventh. Notre Dame’s Alex Sherman is a state alternate after an eighth-place finish (1,359).

Narrowly missing out on qualifying were Susquehanna Valley’s Mike Martir and Tioga’s Travis Moyer, who finish tied for ninth with 1,353 pins and Vestal’s Kyle Ferris, who was 11th with 1,346.

Corning won the team competition with a total of 3,551 pins in the six games, topping second-place Waverly (3,325). Windsor (3,325 pins) was third and Sidney (3,161) finished sixth. Susquehanna Valley (eighth with 3,026 pins), Binghamton (ninth, 2,984) and Bainbridge-Guilford (10th, 2,754) rounded out the 10-team field.

The girls State Qualifier will take place today in Waverly.

The New York State Championships will take place March 1-2 on AMF Babylon Lanes in West Babylon, on Long Island.

Boys basketball

Chenango Valley 51, Watkins Glen 50: At WG, Chenango Valley’s Zach Cole hit two free throws with 5.8 seconds left to lead the Warriors in a nonconference game. Watkins Glen turned the ball over on its following possession to seal the CV victory. Brian Cox tallied nine points to lead a balanced CV scoring attack as Cole added eight points, Kolby Ross seven and three others players contributed six.

Watkins Glen’s Adam Tuttle led all scorers with 15 points.

Girls basketball

Union-Endicott 57, Norwich 48: At U-E, Victoria Mattarell tallied a season-high 18 points and Nicole Kaczmarczyk added 15 to lead U-E to a nonleague victory.

Alexis Eastman added 15 rebounds and three blocks and the Tigers were able to handle Norwich’s pressure. Jenni Borfitz and Breanna Cashman had 10 points each for the Purple Tornado.

Hockey

Union-Endicott 8, Chenango Valley 3: At Dickinson, Luke Wilbur scored six goals, leading Union-Endicott past Chenango Valley in a Broome County High School Hockey Association playoff game at the SUNY Broome Ice Center.

With the victory, U-E eliminated CV from the double-elimination tournament. Tyler Pavlovich and Patrick Kettle scored U-E’s other goals, and Adam Sokol and Dylan Konecny had three assists each. Owen Miller made 39 saves for U-E.

Dalton Oakley, Joey Jarrett and Jordan Broughton scored for Chenango Valley, which outshot U-E 42-36. Spencer Root made nine saves and Tara Riley 19 for CV.

Union-Endicott advances to play Johnson City at 6:45 on Sunday at SUNY Broome.

Swimming

Section 4 Diving Finals: At Owego, Union-Endicott diver Nate Garris’ score of 420.75 was good enough to qualify for the state meet. Garris was tops in Class A while Maine-Endwell’s Brian LaSarso won Class B with a score of 383.40. Chris Roberts of Chenango Forks topped Class C with a total of 268.85
