High School Roundup: Kolby Ross tosses gem for Chenango Valley

Chenango Valley’s Kolby Ross tossed a two-hitter, helping the visiting Warriors edge Oneonta 2-1 in Thursday’s Section 4 Class B baseball contest.

Ross, a junior, finished with nine strikeouts and scored CV’s second run in the top of the fourth inning with Brian Cox getting the RBI.

Up 2-0 in the sixth inning, Ross successfully got out of a bases-loaded no out jam with minimal damage. After Oneonta managed to to cut it to a one run game, CV second basemen Max Telfer threw out the potential tieing run at the plate to end the inning.

The Warriors (10-10) travel to top seeded Susquehanna Valley on Tuesday for a Class B semifinal game.

Susquehanna Valley 8, Waverly 1: At SV, Ryan Caroway allowed no hits through the first six innings to lead the Sabers in a Class B quarterfinal match. Caroway earned five strikeouts and allowed two hits, one walk and a run. The Sabers scored four runs in the fourth inning and four more in the sixth when Austin Whited hit a three-run home run.

Hancock 10, Stamford 0: At Hancock, Ryan Smith threw 12 strikeouts and earned his 30th career varsity win to help the Wildcats to victory. Preston Walker earned five RBIs, hitting a three-run home run in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead and a two-RBI single in the second. Lane Bass also hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning.

Seton Catholic Central 7, Unatego 0: At Conlon Field, Michael Korchak struck out 16 of the 19 batters he faced to lead the top seeded Saints to the Class C semifinals. The senior ace allowed just one hit and walked zero. At the plate he finished with two hits with one of them being a two RBI double in the fourth inning where the hosts scored all seven of their runs.

SCC (12-6) hosts Elmira Notre Dame at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Tioga 4, Lansing 2: At Tioga, Peter simmons pitched a complete game with six strikeouts as Tioga (15-2) won in the Class C sectionals. Offensively Adam Layman went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored and teammate Tanner Folk added an RBI single in the third inning.

Tioga plays the winner of Thomas A. Edison/Sidney in Tuesdays’s semifinals.

Dryden 3, Chenango Forks 1: At Chenango Forks, John Whitmore tossed a four-hitter and teammate Brian Colbert hit a two-RBI double in the top of the fifth inning as the Lions (12-6) advanced to the Class B semifinals.

Softball

Tioga 14, Unatego 0: at Tioga, Sam Wood pitched a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and zero walks helping Tioga (13-3) advance in Class C. At the plate, wood went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, grand slam and five RBIs with teammate Dani Barto finishing 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

The Tigers host Sidney at 4:30 on Tuesday.

Groton 13, Moravia 7: At Groton, the Indians scored 10 runs in the third inning to top Moravia in a Class C sectionals game. Katie VanBenschoten went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored, including a two-run homer in the third inning.

Three walks, extra base hits and mistakes on the part of Moravia in the third also helped the Indians control the game.

Deposit 17, Milford 1: At Deposit, the Lumberjacks had seven consecutive hits and scored six runs in the second inning to win a Class D sectional game.

Deposit added eight runs in the sixth inning, as Kylie Papagelos hit a two-out bases-clearing double and earned three of her four RBIs in the game. Kassi Cook posted 13 strikeouts to uphold Deposit’s defense.
