High School Roundup: Merrill helps lead Owego girls past Norwich in basketball

Rachel Merrill scored eight of her game-high 16 points in the decisive fourth quarter as Owego edged host Norwich, 48-44, in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference girls basketball game Wednesday evening.

Up by two late in the game, Owego forced a Norwich turnover and Merrill hit two free throws with less than 20 seconds left.

Emily Merrill had 13 points and Jill Silvanic added nine for the Indians.

Norwich went on an 8-0 to take a one-point lead late in the first half, but Owego hit a shot at the buzzer to take a 26-25 lead at halftime.

Breanna Cashman and Carin Kuhn each scored 11 points to lead the Purple Tornado.

Maine-Endwell 54, Ithaca 36: At Maine-Endwell, Daniella Dean led all scorers with 12 points as the Spartans topped the Little Red.

“I thought our kids played with a lot of energy tonight,” M-E coach Sonny Spera said. “I thought defensively we played pretty well. We were able to push them outside of where they like to be.”

Maryah Wright led Ithaca with 10 points.

Vestal 53, Corning 36: At Corning, Vestal’s Jen Shelp scored 12 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter as the Golden Bears (5-1) pulled away late from Corning (3-4).

Corning limited Vestal to three first-quarter points and trailed 36-31 with four minutes left in the fourth quarter before Vestal managed to seize control.

Alex Evans added 14 points and Annie Ulrich 13 for Vestal. Sarah Trifoso had 12 points to pace Corning.

Horseheads 52, Binghamton 39: At Binghamton, Elle Lesyck scored 16 points to pace Horseheads in a STAC win. Katie Reasons chipped in with 10 points as well, while the Patriots were led by Monica McManus’ 12 points.

Chenango Valley 48, Johnson City 30: At Chenango Valley, Maggie Gross had a team-high 10 points and Hannah Elliott grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Warriors (7-2) to a STAC victory over Johnson City.

Chris Carpentieri scored 17 points to lead the Wildcats.

Susquehanna Valley 62, Windsor 28: At Windsor, Shayna Lee had a game-high 16 points as Susquehanna Valley routed Windsor.

Morgan Finch scored nine points and Maddie Blackman and Jordyn Williams adding eight apiece for the Sabers.

Liz Wickizer led the Black Knights with 10 points.

Union-Endicott 45, Elmira 25: At Elmira, Alexis Eastman had a game-high 11 points as the Tigers cruised to a STAC victory. Victoria Mattarell added eight points for U-E, which held Elmira to less than nine points in all four quarters.

Greene 51, Afton 37: At Afton, Katie Carey (16 points), Sierra Stoppkotte (15) and Jessica David (11) all reached double-figure scoring to lead the Trojans to a Midstate Athletic Conference victory.

Harpursville 57, Delhi 39: At Harpursville, Miranda Drummond led all scorers with 24 points as Harpursville won a MAC contest over Delhi. The Hornets (9-0) are the state’s top-ranked team in Class C.

Boys basketball

Vestal 86, Corning 60: At Vestal, Kevin Franz scored 21 points as the Golden Bears cruised to a STAC victory over Corning.

Nick Wegmann added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Bears (1-5), who set a season high with 86 points, including 33 points in the fourth quarter. Anthony Corby led Corning with 19 points.

Ithaca 55, Maine-Endwell 47: At Ithaca, Jake Sinicki scored 13 points and Kyle Gallagher added 12, but the Spartans fell to Ithaca in STAC play. Steven Stage scored 26 points to lead the Little Red.

Binghamton 67, Horseheads 39: At Horseheads, Mario Cherry led all scorers with 12 points as the Patriots topped Horseheads in a STAC contest. Andre Hawkins added 11 points and and Nick Snyder had 10 for Binghamton, which led 30-20 at halftime and never trailed from there.

Whitney Point 60, Waverly 41: At Waverly, Zach Marsh scored a game-high 14 points while Brady Harrington and Gabe Schrauger each contributed 12 in Whitney Point’s Interscholastic Athletic Conference victory. Peyton Miller led Waverly with nine points.

Groton 54, Odessa-Montour 38: At Groton, Will Stoughton had a varsity-high 18 points and Michael Perkins tied a varsity-high with 10 points and 10 rebounds in victory. Trailing by a point at halftime, the Indians outscored O-M 33-16 in the second half.

Watkins Glen 46, Lansing 40: At Watkins Glen, Keith Rekczis scored 14 points along with eight rebounds and three steals in an IAC win over Lansing. Matt Estes had a game-high 16 points for Senecas. Ben Rourke and Thomas Towner had 13 and 12 points, respectively, in defeat.

Swimming

Chenango Valley 100, Susquehanna Valley 69: At SV, Carl Grunder won the 200 IM, 100 butterfly and was a member of winning teams in the 200-yard medley relay and 200 free relay as the Warriors beat the Sabers in a STAC swim meet.
