Michael Korchak hit a two-out, fifth inning grand slam, helping the Seton Catholic Central baseball team edge host Chenango Forks 4-2 in Southern Tier Athletic Conference play on Thursday.
Korchak also threw five innings on the mound, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out six. David George pitched the final two scoreless innings for the Saints (1-0), who are the defending Class C state champions.
Chenango Forks pitcher Jacob Stone struck out 13 batters in six innings.
Spencer-Van Etten 8, Newark Valley 8: At Newark Valley, the game was called after seven innings due to darkness. S-VE’s Eliott Deppe drove in three RBIs and struck out 11 batters. Vinnie Darpino went 2-for-4 for Newark Valley.
Sidney 15, Walton 0: At Sidney, Brandon Bessett threw six shutout innings and drove in three runs to lead Sidney (1-0) to a MAC victory.
Johnson City 20, Elmira Notre Dame 10: At JC, Nick Neferis scored six goals, and won 15-of-15 faceoffs as the Wildcats opened their season with a Section 4 victory. Josh Davis scored five goals, and Shane Majewski added two goals and four assists for JC (1-0).
Jonas McCaig recorded four goals and five assists for Elmira Notre Dame.
Maine-Endwell 17, Dryden 4: At M-E, Brock Post tallied six goals and four assists for the Spartans and Connor O’Brien added four goals for M-E (5-0), which scored five unanswered goals in the last 1:34 of the first quarter to register a 10-1 lead after the period. The Spartans host Vestal (3-0) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Elmira 6, Seton Catholic Central 5: At Elmira, Eli Halperin scored two goals with an assist, helping the Express win its first game in program history. Sam Crowley scored four goals for SCC.
Chenango Forks 12, Owego 5: At Chenango Forks, three players recorded hat tricks to drive the Blue Devils. The Blue Devils found the back of the net in four man-up situations, improving to 4-0 on the season.
Whitney Point 12, Oneonta 9: At Oneonta, Jake Lynch registered six goals and three assists to lead the Golden Eagles (2-1). Corey Hodges added three goals and an assist for Whitney Point, which trailed 5-1 before scoring 11 consecutive goals throughout the second and third quarters.
Afton 15, Hancock 0: At Afton, Sierra Palmatier batted 3-for-4 and tallied 5 RBIs for the Crimson Knights in a Midstate Athletic Conference match.
Vestal 5, Horseheads 2: At Horseheads, the Bears gained momentum in the doubles matches, grabbing all three to seal the victory over the Blue Raiders.
