High school roundup: Norwich baseball rallies to top Chenango Valley


Norwich rallied to defeat Chenango Valley, 4-3, in nine innings in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference baseball game at Norwich on Friday.

Purple Tornado senior pitcher Derek Manwarren pitched a complete-game three-hitter to earn the win. The right-hander struck out one and walked two.

CV led 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, and 3-2 with two outs. Jake Walsh scored the tying run on a bases-loaded RBI single to right field by John Yacano. The Purple Tornado (4-4) had a runner thrown out at the plate on the same play to end the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Chris Trevisani reached on an error, advanced to third on a hit-and-run as Walsh collected his second single, and scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

Walsh went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Yacano added two hits and a apir of RBIs.

Kolby Ross went 2-for-3 with a run scored for CV.

Seton Catholic Central 9, Chenango Forks 8: At NYSEG Stadium, Tyler Krowiak finsihed 4-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored, helping the Saints edge the Blue Devils in a eight-inning STAC affair.

SCC’s Rob Olsen, David George, Michael Korchak and Neil McCormack all walked in succession to score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth and Matt Ogozaly had a two-out, two-RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extras.

Andrew Ziegenfus stroked a second inning three run home run for Chenango Forks.

Tioga 21, Candor 5: At Candor, Ryan Vergason collected three hits and five RBIs, and Peter Simmons went 3-for-5 with a trio of RBIs in an IAC victory. Jesse Manuel earned the win, striking out six over four innings. For Candor, Kevin Jensen went 2-for-4.

Vestal 15, Binghamton 2: At Binghamton, Jake Spellane hit two home runs, a two-run shot in the fourth and a solo shot in the seventh, propelling the Golden Bears to victory. Matt Heichemer pitched a complete game, striking out six and allowing four hits and two runs (one earned).

Susquehanna Valley 6, Owego 4: At SV, Matthew Hassig hit a two-run single in the fifth inning to win the game for the Sabers.

Horseheads 4, Ithaca 2: At Ithaca, Ryan Richard hit a home run for the Raiders in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie in the STAC matchup.

Newark Valley 8, Watkins Glen 1: At Newark Valley, Brett Stewart registered four RBIs for the Cardinals. NV pitcher Blake Novi recorded nine strikeouts.

Moravia 11, Whitney Point 7: At Whitney Point, the Blue Devils took the lead in the fifth inning, scoring seven runs from one hit and nine walks.

Hancock 10, Unatego 9: At Hancock, Zach Worobey and Eli Holton each hit home runs in a five-run fourth inning in a MAC victory. Holton hit a three-run shot, his 10th career varsity home run. Hancock coach Brandon Olbrys won his 100th career victory coaching the Wildcats (9-2).

Sidney 7, Bainbridge-Guilford 5: At Sidney, Patrick Vibbard hit a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Hoskins to take the lead for the Warriors in the sixth inning.

Seton Catholic Central 19, Dryden 15: At SCC, Dan O’Brien tallied four goals to go with six assists, helping the Saints (3-6) win a Section 4 contest. Alex Walsh added four goals and four assists, and Sam Crowley recorded four goals and an assist for SCC, which led 17-8 after three quarters. Griffen Covert was the fourth Saints player with at least four points, finishing with three goals and an assist.

Chenango Forks 16, Elmira Notre Dame 4: At Chenango Forks, the Blue Devils went on an 8-2 run in the second quarter to cruise past the Crusaders. Jack Sherwood posted four goals and an assist for the Blue Devils while teammate Brandon Dutcher added a hat trick.

Johnson City 18, Oneonta 6: At Johnson City, Nick Neferis won 16 of 21 faceoffs for the Wildcats and added six goals and three assists. Shane Majewski tallied seven goals for the Patriots.

Maine-Endwell 16, Owego 4: At M-E, the Spartans went on a 6-0 run in the third quarter to take over the Section 4 game. Brock Post recorded five goals while Vincent Vultaggio and Justin Miller each put up hat tricks for the Spartans.


Maine-Endwell 6, Horseheads 4: At M-E, Natalie Longo had a two-out double in the fifth inning that drove in two runs, helping the Spartans (8-1) hold on for a STAC victory. Kim Jones finished 2-for-4 with an RBI double and was the winning pitcher, tossing five innings.

Chenango Forks 20, Seton Catholic Central 5: At CF, Elena Shelepak hit a two-run home run in the first inning, helping the Blue Devils (5-1) rout the Saints in STAC play.

Hancock 16, Unatego 1: At Hancock, the Wildcats’ Brooke Sherburne hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning and totaled five RBIs while Sierra Keesler batted 3-for-3 with a double, triple, and two RBIs. Pitcher Cynthia Wormuth finished with eight strikeouts.

Tioga 7, Candor 2: At Candor, Sam Wood pitched a complete game, striking out five and walking only one in an Interscholastic Athletic Conference victory. At the plate Wood posted a 3-for-4 line with two doubles and four RBIs.


Watkins Glen 237, Newark Valley 277: At Grand View Farms, Chad Wright hit a hole-in-one on hole 7 (par-3, 127 yards) for Newark Valley.
