Susquehanna Valley edged host Chenango Valley, 9-8, to advance to the semifinals of the Section 4 Class B softball tournament.
The Sabers (11-7) will travel to top-seeded Windsor for a 4:30 p.m. game on Thursday.
SV came out swinging, plating five runs from six hits to take a first-inning lead. The Sabers added two runs in the fifth to go ahead 7-2.
The Warriors responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, including a two-run home run from Chelsea Henige, to cut the lead to 7-6. Despite CV’s rally, the Sabers held on to the win, matching the Warriors’ two runs in the sixth inning.
Windsor 21, Newark Valley 1: At Windsor, Mara Kohlbach tossed a two-hitter and went 3-for-3 with an RBI as the top-seeded Black Knights cruised to a Section 4 Class B win. Rachel Deangelo went 3-for-5 with three singles and five RBIs and teammate Emma Benson finished with two doubles, two RBI’s and five runs scored for Windsor (20-1), which hosts Susquehanna Valley in the Class B Semifinals on Thursday.
Thomas A. Edison 3, Harpursville 0: At Elmira Heights, Katelyn Warren drove in runs in the third and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead for TAE. Emily Thresher added an RBI in the sixth, while Mackenzie Slaven threw 10 strikeouts and no walks to hold on to the Spartans’ Class C quarterfinal win.
Afton 13, Schenevus 0: At Afton, the Crimson Knights plated nine runs in the first inning as a result of walks, hit batters and a few singles. Afton added four runs in the sixth inning, including a two-RBI single from Shawna Stevens. Cassidy Phillips and Tanya Hatton combined for 19 strikeouts and held Schenevus to two hits.
Deposit 12, Edmeston 6: At Edmeston, Alea Tiffany batted 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored to help Deposit win a Class D quarterfinal match. Kassi Cook helped the Lumberjacks pull away with a two-run homer in the sixth inning. The Panthers rallied with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Cook held them off with 14 strikeouts and two walks.
Susquehanna Valley 9, Chenango Valley 5: At SV, The Sabers scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away from the Warriors and advance to the Section 4 Class B final. With the game tied at 5, SV’s Matt Merrell drove in the go-ahead run for the 6-5 lead. Later in the inning, Dave Matthews, Justin Caroway and Ryan Caroway strung together consective singles to tack on three additional runs.
Matthews finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and was the game’s winning pitcher, tossing six innings on the mound. The top-seeded Sabers (12-9) will play Union Springs for the Class B title at 4:30 p.m. at Binghamton University on Friday.
Chenango Valley’s Gavin Ashman finished 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in the sixth inning and losing pitcher Kolby Ross went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Hancock 7, Milford 5: At Hancock, the Wildcats plated six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull away for the Class D victory. Seth Simmons hit a two RBI double, Preston Walker added an RBI single and Zach Worobey smashed a two-run home run to give the hosts a comfortable 6-1 lead. Winning pitcher Eli Holton struck out nine.
Hancock (17-4) advances to the Class D final where it will play rival Deposit on Friday at Damaschke Field in Oneonta.
