High School Roundup: Susquehanna Valley's DJ Griffiths leads Section 4 golf tournament


Susquehanna Valley’s DJ Griffiths shot a 3-over 74 to top a 22-man field after the first day of the Section Four Medalist Golf Tournament on Thursday at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University.

Windsor’s Matt Ploutz is tied for second after shooting a 76, and teammate Nate Wrighter is in third with a 7-over 78. Other top performers were Vestal’s Nick Barney (81) and Ryan Mihok (82), Chenago Forks’ Kyle Norton (84), Chenango Valley’s Charlie Kane (85) and Union-Endicott’s Hogan Bendert (85).

The golfers finish up the tournament on Saturday morning.


Hancock 4, Sidney 2: At Afton, Hancock won its first Midstate Athletic Conference championship, and the school’s first conference title since 1983. Ryan Holton tossed a complete game with eight strikeouts and added a 2-for-3 line with an RBI at the plate. Seth Simmons hit a two-out RBI single to cap a four-run top of the third inning. The game was called after six innings due to rain.

Sidney’s Billy Kozak finished 2-for-3 with a triple and a double. Hancock (14-4) will be the top seed in the upcoming Class D sectionals.


Afton 8, Hancock 0: At Afton, Tanya Hatton pitched a one-hit shutout with 15 strikeouts to help Afton (13-1) successfully defend its MAC championship. Teammates Payton Cutting finished 2-for-3 and catcher Bailey Sherman hit an RBI triple in the third inning.

Boys lacrosse

Chenango Forks 17, Seton Catholic Central 6: At CF, Brandon Dutcher scored five goals to lead the Blue Devils (11-5) to a rout in the first round of the Class C sectionals. Dutcher scored four of his goals in the first half, and teammate Jack Sherwood added three goals and two assists for Forks. which led 6-2 after the first quarter and was never threatened.

The Blue Devils advance to play at top seeded Johnson City on Tuesday.

Corning 18, Horseheads 9: At Horseheads, the Raiders led 5-3 after the first quarter, but Corning took over with a 7-0 run in the second to win. Spencer Passmore led the Hawks with three goals and seven assists and teammate Andrew Buck added four goals.

Girls lacrosse

Vestal 15, Ithaca 5: At Ithaca, the Golden Bears took control in the second half, outscoring the Little Red 10-1 to win the Section 4 matchup.Tomasina Leska led Vestal with four goals and four assists while Devon McKercher added a hat trick and an assist.


Class A Sectionals: At Tioga Hills Elementary, Vestal’s Parth Lalkiya won each of his first two matches to advance to Tuesday’s medalist round. The Golden Bears team is currently in fifth place after two rounds of play with Union-Endicott following in sixth and Binghamton in seventh.

Class C-D West: At Southern Cayuga, Lansing and SC finished in a tie for first place after playing three rounds. The Chiefs won all of their first round matches to keep pace with the Bobcats.

Girls golf

Waverly’s Jordan Raupers had her first career hole-in-one on the par-3 fifth hole at the Watkins Glen Golf Course. She finished with a round of 46 over the nine-holes.
