High School Roundup: Union-Endicott cruises past Chenango Forks in hockey


Four different players scored as Union-Endicott shut out Chenango Valley 4-0 in a Broome County High School Hockey Association game Thursday night at SUNY Broome.

U-E’s Luke Wilbur and Ryan Ripic each had a goal and an assist, while Tom Cataldo and Alex Amed added the other two goals. Adam Sokol was credited with two assists and Connor Kettle made 17 saves in the victory.

Tara Riley had 33 saves for the Warriors, who were outshot 37-17.

Boys basketball

Elmira Notre Dame 58, Candor 36: At Candor, Darius Garvin led all scorers with 26 points as the Crusaders cruised to an Interscholastic Athletic Conference victory. Tom Agan added 11 points for Notre Dame (11-1), which is ranked fifth in Class C in the state.

Wyatt Whitmore had 12 points and Kevin Jensen scored 10 for Candor.

Watkins Glen 40, Waverly 33: At Waverly, Dylan Perry scored a game-high 14 points, but the Wolverines (5-6, 5-5) fell in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference matchup to the Senecas (9-2, 6-1). Luke Flahive scored 11 points for Glen, which held Waverly to nine first-half points.

Unadilla Valley 66, Harpursville 60: At UV, Nate Schackleton scored 11 of his team-high 17 points in the second half as the Storm (9-3) won the Midstate Athletic Conference contest.

Harpursville’s Devon Dean led all scorers with 18 points.


Greene 39, Waverly 36: Jeff Pornbeck recorded a key win at 195 pounds as the Trojans edged Waverly in a nonleague dual meet. Pornbeck pinned Jordan Huck on a headlock in 2 minutes, 39 seconds to clinch the match for Greene (6-6).

Johnson City 55, Windsor 18: At Windsor, Johnson City eighth-grader Erick Rigal earned his first varsity win at 99 pounds and the Wildcats topped the Black Knights in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference meet. Rigal recorded a 14-4 win over Dillon Morgan for his first win.

Girls hoops showdown

Horseheads will host Maine-Endwell on Friday night in a meeting of two of the top girls basketball teams in the state. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. at Horseheads Middle School, following the junior varsity contest.

Horseheads (9-1) is ranked 17th in Class AA by the New York State Sportswriters Association, with the lone loss coming at Maine-Endwell, 54-39, on Dec. 11. The Blue Raiders are on the verge of clinching their seventh straight Southern Tier Athletic Conference West Division title.

Junior forward Amanda Schiefen, one of Horseheads’ top players, returned to the lineup Tuesday and scored 13 points in a 60-31 win over Union-Endicott. She sat out two games last week with an ankle injury.

The Spartans (9-1) are ranked 12th in Class A. Their loss came to Vestal, 55-49, on Dec. 20.

More wrestling Saturday

The 10-team Elmira Christmas Tournament will be held Saturday at Southside High School, starting at 9:30 a.m. The wrestling tournament was originally scheduled for Dec. 14 but was postponed because of a snowstorm.

Teams scheduled in addition to Elmira are Corning, Homer, Waverly, Whitney Point, Watkins Glen, Odessa-Montour, Tioga, Union-Endicott and Owego Free Academy.

The tournament will use a pooled format and finals are expected to begin around 5 p.m.

Waverly hosts swim invitational

Ten boys swimming and diving teams are scheduled to compete in the first Wolverine Invitational on Saturday at Waverly High School.

The lineup includes Susquehanna Valley, Owego Free Academy, Southern Cayuga, Sayre, Vestal, Corning, Horseheads, Chenango Valley, Lansing and Waverly.

Diving begins at 9 a.m. and will include an 11-dive format. Swimming warm-ups start at 1 p.m., followed at 2 by the timed finals.
