High School Roundup: Vestal wrestlers dominate Corning


The Vestal wrestling team overpowered visiting Corning in a 61-15 victory in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference meet Thursday night.

Key matches were at 195 pounds, where Pat Carlin recorded a 10-0 decision over Corning’s Kyle Zahradka, and at 220 pounds, where Tyler Lane pinned Corning’s Dan Reed on an upper body throw in 1 minute, 1 second. Carlin improved to 15-0 this season.

The Golden Bears (15-1) head to the Mike Watson Invitational this weekend in Watkins Glen, where they will defend their title.

Windsor 50, Chenango Forks 27: At Windsor, the Black Knights topped Forks in a dual meet. In a pair of close matches, Austin Orshal recorded a 1-0 decision over Seron Mullings at 182 pounds and Dave McKee edged Caleb Gould by a 7-5 decision at 195.

Watkins Glen 61, Odessa-Montour 21: At Watkins Glen, Matt Estes scored a game-high 14 points and Joe Palumbo chipped in 12 points, five steals and three rebounds in an Interscholastic Athletic Conference win. Watkins Glen led 21-3 after the first quarter.

Sidney 57, Afton 45: At Sidney, Bill Kozak led all scorers with 17 points as the Warriors picked up a Midstate Athletic Conference victory. Sidney outscored the visitors by a 22-10 margin in the decisive fourth quarter.


Norwich 102, Windsor 81: At Norwich, Curtis Woodard won the 200 IM, 500 free and was a member of the winning team in the 200-yard medley relay as the Purple Tornado earned a STAC victory.

Horseheads 67, Union-Endicott 35: At U-E, Kenyon Winkky and Patrick Leslie of Horseheads each set U-E pool records. Winkky finished the 100 backstroke in 58.18 seconds and Leslie set a new record in the 100 freestyle finishing in 48.92 seconds.


Chenango Valley 2, Chenango Forks 2: At SUNY Broome, Jordan Shelepak and Josh Mauf scored for the Blue Devils while Max Telfer and Ryan Corey matched their effort for Chenango Valley, earning a tie in the Broome County High School Hockey Association contest.
