High school roundup: Wall boys tennis team tops Middletown South

The host Wall boys tennis team won its regular-season opener, downing Middletown South 5-0 in nondivisional action Thursday.

Shane Jeffray led the Crimson Knights, beating the Eagles’ M.J. Peterson 6-0, 6-0 at first singles.

Also prevailing at singles were Graham Graver at No. 2 and Conner Prasad at No. 3. Graver topped Will Weiss 6-0, 6-0. Prasad defeated Alex Sundt 6-0, 6-0.

At doubles, Jake Evans and Sean Duncan and Donnie Corson and Triston Spennato were winners at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.

Evans and Duncan teamed for a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jack Peters and Zach Johnson. Corson and Spennato blanked Brian Nelson and Will Disher 6-0, 6-0.

MONMOUTH 2, RB CATHOLIC 0: First-singles player Ivan Romano led the host Falcons (2-0, 2-0) past the Caseys (0-1, 0-1) in Class A Central.

Romano was a 6-1, 6-0 winner. Vanni Roa and Greg Wall came out on top 6-0, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-2 at second and third singles, respectively.

TR EAST 5, BRICK 0: The visiting Raiders (2-0, 1-0) remained unbeaten with a Class A South victory over the Green Dragons (0-2, 0-1).

Leading the win were Derek Muniz, Walter Mills and Chris Cairone. Muniz won 6-0, 6-2 at first singles. Mills triumphed 6-0, 6-0 at second singles. Cairone was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at third singles.

The Raiders pooled their talents for doubles wins. Kemal Kansu and Matthew Palmieri won at first doubles 6-2, 6-3. Chris Woolley and Robert Roche prevailed 6-1, 6-2 at second doubles.

TR NORTH 5, JACKSON MEMORIAL 0: Jordan Mallen powered the visiting Mariners (2-0, 2-0) past the Jaguars (1-1, 1-1) in Class A South.

Competing at first singles, Mallen beat Noah Panitoh 6-0, 6-0.

HOLMDEL 4, MARLBORO 1: The host Hornets (2-0) trimmed the Mustangs (1-1) in nondivisional action.

Junior Michael Chen keyed the win with a 6-0, 6-1 first-singles victory. Senior Sam Joynson and sophomore Dennis Barlotta won in straight sets at second and third singles, respectively.

CBA 4, MANALAPAN 1: Sweeping the singles flights, the visiting Colts (2-0) downed the Braves (1-1) in Class A North.

No. 1 Anthony Dein won in straight sets. No. 2 senior Mike Montanelli was a straight sets winner. Freshman Sean Reilly prevailed in straight sets at No. 3.

IN GIRLS LACROSSE:

JACKSON MEMORIAL 7, BRICK MEMORIAL 6 (OT): Stephanie Costa scored the game-winning goal in overtime leading the Jaguars (1-1) over the Mustangs (0-4) in a Class A South game. Rihanna Jackson scored a goal for the Jaguars with 13 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.

Stephanie Corino finished with three goals for the Mustangs.

WALL 10, TR NORTH 7: Kelley Rahn’s 14 saves stopped a late surge from the Mariners (3-1), leading the Crimson Knights (4-0) to a big nondivisonal win. Sophie Lozowski finished with three goals and eight total points for the Crimson Knights.

Makenzie Putnam scored two goals, and Kaitlyn Cassidy added a goal and an assist for the Mariners.

IN BOYS VOLLEYBALL:

COLTS NECK 2, MARLBORO 1: The visiting Cougars (3-0, 2-0) rallied for a Class A North win over the Mustangs (1-1, 1-1).

The Cougars trailed 21-19 in the third game before launching their comeback. They took the game 25-22. For Colts Neck, junior middle blocker Mike Lamb notched nine kills and three blocks. Junior outside hitter Chris Lomauro added eight kills and two blocks.

Marlboro’s Bobby Jastrzebski blasted home 19 kills. Zach Jay added 35 assists and five digs. Greg Hoffman contributed eight kills and two blocks. Steve Tu scrapped for 16 digs.

RED BANK CATHOLIC 2, BARNEGAT 1: The Caseys (1-2, 1-2) captured the third game 25-11 for a Class A Central win over the host Bengals (1-1, 0-1).

Red Bank Catholic’s J.P. Legrottaglie put up five kills and three digs. Pat Meehan added six digs. Mac Taylor notched three kills and five blocks. Barnegat’s Justin Kovacs put up 10 kills. Will Leamon added seven kills. Frank Buckley contributed six kills.

WALL 2, MANCHESTER 0: Chris Smith’s nine kills and 14 digs helped the host Crimson Knights (2-0, 2-0) past the Hawks (0-2, 0-2) in Class A Central.

For Wall, Brady Donahue added seven kills and seven digs. Carlos Medina contributed 15 assists, two aces and three digs. Gerard Dunn added eight digs and six aces. Matt Cusick notched four aces and two digs.

CBA 2, FREEHOLD 0: Dan Dobrowolski’s 22 assists and four digs and Nick Osborne’s 10 kills and three digs led the host Colts (4-1, 2-0) past the Colonials in Class A North.

Chuck Johnson added eight kills and two digs. For Freehold, Eric Horowitz finished with four digs. Nick Krauss added three blocks. Harry Biddle contributed two kills.

ST. JOHN VIANNEY 2, HOWELL 0: Senior outside hitter Justin Sandy’s nine kills, four digs and three aces propelled the host Lancers past the Rebels in Class A North.

Senior libero Thomas Corbisiero added 11 digs. Junior outside hitter Alex Politi contributed six kills and four digs. Sophomore opposite Michael McGimpsey added three kills and two blocks.

For Howell, Jason Gillies notched two kills, 19 assists and five digs. Jake Brown added 13 kills and three digs. Kyle Yuro made three kills and handed out three assists. James Donahue added three kills.

TR EAST 2, CENTRAL 0: The visiting Raiders (1-2, 1-1) won their first match of the season, downing the Golden Eagles (0-2, 0-2) in Class A South.

Tyler Lazio led East with 18 assists. Evan Turner and Nat Amador added eight kills and seven kills, respectively. Jonathan Dula keyed the Golden Eagles with three kills and three digs. Bryan Jones and Alex Rippman added six assists and three kills, respectively.

DONOVAN 2, LONG BRANCH 0: Led by Chris Eiserle’s two kills, 15 assists and two aces, the visiting Griffins (2-0, 2-0) beat the Green Wave (0-2, 0-1) in Class A Central.

David Wintrode added six kills and three digs. Matt Dalton contributed four digs and two aces. Kevin Solano paced the Green Wave with eight assists.

TR NORTH 2, LACEY 0: Nicolas Mercadante, Daniel Dellane and Zachary Lynne led the host Mariners (2-1, 2-0) to a Class A South win over the Lions.

Mercadante finished with eight kills, three aces and seven digs. Dellane notched 18 assists. Lynne hustled to 15 digs.
