The four finalists for the 2014 Ernie Davis Award, presented to the top high school football player in Chemung County, were announced Saturday at the Arnot Mall in Horseheads.
Finalists are Josh Cosgrove of Thomas A. Edison, Sam Bruner of Notre Dame, Jerry McPeak of Elmira and Ben Clark of Horseheads.
The winner will be revealed at the Elmira Kiwanis Club luncheon at noon Thursday at the Elmira Holiday Inn-Riverview.
Ithaca College Bomber Invitational: Elmira’s Abbey Wheeler won the 3,000 meters (10:15.05) and teammate Khiere Ashley won the 1,000 (3:08.02) at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational.
Other winners included Waverly’s Kate Oteng-Bediako in the girls long jump (17 feet, 3 inches) and Horseheads’ Sebastian Bauco in the boys 3,200 (10:51.70).
Horseheads’ Winkky wins two: Kenyon Winkky of Horseheads won the 200-yard individual medley and 100 backstroke at the Owego Invitational, lifting the Blue Raiders to a third-place finish at the seven-team meet.
Winkky took the 200 IM in 2:11.01 and the backstroke in 54.83. M-E won the team title with 618 points, followed by Ithaca with 522 and Horseheads with 412.
Vestal 61, Elmira 49: At Vestal on Friday, Tyler Moffe scored 24 points for defending West Division champion Elmira in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference loss. Chad Loyd added 11 ponts for the Express.
Andrew O’Hara led Vestal with 19 points.
Waverly 58, Candor 38: At Candor, Peyton Miller scored 13 points to lift the Wolverines to an Interscholastic Athletic Conference win. Hunter Bodine and Jeff Mitchell added 10 points each for Waverly (2-0).
Bishop Kearney 93, Corning 39: At Corning, Section 5 power Bishop Kearney downed the Hawks in their first official game at their new gym. The game also marked the debut of Corning head coach John Fesetch.
Waverly 51, Candor 39: At Waverly, Kiana Manuel scored 19 points to lift the Wolverines to an IAC victory.
Watkins Glen 35, Tioga 18: At Tioga on Friday, Madison Gates scored 12 points to lead the Senecas’ to a season-opening IAC win.
