CAMPBELL COUNTY – Northern Kentucky runners will chase state championship dreams Saturday, Nov. 8, at Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. The Class 1A meet will start at 9:30 a.m., 2A at 11:30 a.m. and 3A at 1:30 p.m.
Here is a look at all the state qualifiers and standout regional performers from Nov. 1. All the regional meets were at Idlewild Park in Burlington.
Highlands won the girls 2A regional championship in Region 4 with seven of the top 16 finishers. Molly Mearns was second in 20:18, Chloe Gastright fourth (20:27), Lauren Ossege sixth (20:45), Adriana Muntaner 10th (21:13) and Sydney Ossege 12th (21:54). Highlands had 34 points to 54 for Lexington Catholic.
Highlands won the boys 2A regional championship with their top five placing in the top 11. Ethan Shuley won with 16:14, followed by Matthew Gray in second (17:05), Will Backscheider in fourth (17:16), Geoffrey Mearns in sixth (17:33) and Jackson Paul in 11th (18:03). Highlands had 24 points to 61 for Covington Catholic.
The Bishop Brossart boys team prepared its defense of its 1A state championship by rolling to the regional title. Brossart scored 27 points to 64 for runner-up St. Henry and had its five scoring runners all in the top 10. Senior Chris Loos finished second in 16:43, followed by Adam Hartig in fourth (17:24), Nick Schuler in fifth (17:31), Ross Klocke in seventh (17:34) and Cody Chism in ninth (17:38).
Also in 1A, Bishop Brossart sophomore Kendall Schuler finished sixth in the regional to earn a state berth, running 21:09.
Campbell County finished fourth in the boys 3A regional to qualify for state. Mark Chaplin led the way by finishing eighth in 17:28. Thomas Comer was 13th (17:49), Joseph Mcgrath 22nd (18:19), Shawn Mcgrath 27th (18:33) and Jared Neiser 29th (18:34).
Campbell County senior Jennah Flairty finished fourth in Class 3A, Region 5 to qualify for state, running a 20:27. Freshman Sidney Reagor finished eighth (20:44) to also snare an individual berth to the state meet.
Newport Central Catholic was fifth in the 1A boys regional to earn a berth at state. Collin Walker finished eighth to lead the way in 17:35. Grant Schwarber was 13th (17:52), Sam Kaelin 24th (18:27), William Lampe 33rd (19:17) and Kenneth Ballard 51st (20:11).
In girls, NCC freshman Maddie Mariani finished 17th in the 1A regional (22:29) and will run at state.
