Longtime Asheville High baseball coach Bill Hillier will be inducted into his high school’s athletic hall of fame on Saturday.
Hillier graduated from Durham Jordan in 1993 as a two-time all-state selection. He batted .549 with three home runs and was 12-2 as a pitcher with a 0.49 earned-run average and 149 strikeouts in 103 innings to earn Piedmont 4-A Conference Player of the Year honors as a senior.
Hillier initially signed out of high school with N.C. State, but then transferred to UNC Asheville where he was a two-time All-Big South Conference selection.
Hillier has coached the Cougars for eight seasons and led them to their first NCHSAA playoff victories since the 1970s in 2012. Asheville reached the second round of the postseason last spring and had a 10-13 record.
