Hockey: John Jay inches closer to League I-A title

Another League I-A title is within John Jay’s grasp.

The Indians, who captured the first Section 1 championship in program history last season, got in front of Somers/North Salem early and hung onto a 4-1 win Monday at Brewster Ice Arena.

John Jay (12-2, 8-0) had plenty of intensity during the first period, but spent the first 10 minutes going back and forth. Lucas Prestamo finally scored on a breakaway with five minutes to go. Shawn Smith got the next one, and Prestamo hustled in for a second goal to make it a 3-0 advantage.

“We’re realizing that we’re not the big dogs anymore,” Indians defenseman Jack Wertz said. “We need to come out strong.”

Ryan Cavanagh extended the lead in the second.

The Sabers (10-3-1, 5-3) were getting chances, but John Jay goalie Matt Lanza was sharp, finishing with 25 saves. The Indians played without standout defenseman Mark Leprine, who’s out with a minor injury.

“(Getting a lead) was so important,” Prestamo said. “Everyone was going hard right from the get-go. We’ve had some problems coming out fast. Matt made some great saves to keep us in the game. Just getting those quick goals put them down.”

Wilson McCloy got the lone Somers/North Salem goal on a rip from the neutral zone.

Best of the rest: New Rochelle freshman Tommy Barry scored with 37 seconds to go in overtime, giving New Rochelle a 4-3 comeback win over Hen Hud. Andre Vigroux knotted the score for the Huguenots with two minutes to play in regulation.
