Holt sprints past Mason for Class A district title

A pair of two-point victories against CAAC Blue teams in Jackson and Grand Ledge had carried Mason through to Friday’s Class A district final, but the Bulldogs could not beat yet another Blue squad.

The class of the league, Holt, ended a spirited Mason run with a 57-37 triumph. The Rams got out to a 19-6 lead after the first quarter and cruised to a win.

“I thought we played really well,” Holt coach Matt Essell said. “That’s a really good Mason team that handled a really good Grand Ledge team the other night and we feel like we’re playing pretty well.”

“To come into this district and play the teams we had to play, I don’t know too many teams that would have cleared all three hurdles,” Mason coach Lee Chaney said. “I can’t thank (my team) enough for giving us the opportunity to play tonight.”

With 10 seniors playing in, arguably, the biggest game of their careers on the heels of a massive upset Wednesday, Mason (14-7) was slow to start in the first quarter and fell behind. Some was due to the Holt defense and the rest was simply a cold first half from the field.

The Rams (19-4) took a 15-point lead into halftime and Mason only had 13 first-half points.

“I thought the first half we forced a lot, but a lot of that was Holt. Their defense was really good tonight,” Chaney said. “We just couldn’t get the ball to drop. If you would have told me before the game they’d only have 58 and the game would be in the 50s, that’s exactly what we wanted. We just couldn’t score. …

“Athletics is funny. There’s a psychological thing there and when it’s not going down you start pressing, you get a little frustrated.”

Holt kept pouring it on in the second half, opening the third quarter on a 9-0 run.

The game was never in doubt after that. Holt showed good balance in the second half with eight difference players registering points.

Senior Tyrell Williams led the Rams with 13 points and senior Colin Jones contributed 10 after leading Holt on Monday with 30 in a double-overtime win over Battle Creek Central.

Senior Don’Quall Jackson added eight points for Holt after having 30 points of his own on Wednesday against Richland Gull Lake — a win that put the Rams in the district final.

“They’re really about as locked in and focused as I’ve seen them in four years,” Essell said of the senior group. “They’re kind of goofy kids who are kind of taking this whole thing really seriously right now. I just think they’ve been around for four years, they’ve grown up and they’ve finally realized that this is their last opportunity and you don’t always get these kinds of opportunities.”

“The last time around, it starts to hit you that you aren’t going to get a next year, so we’ve got to put it all on the court right now,” Williams said.
