Jace Hogan has been the face of Holy Trinity basketball this season, but on Saturday in the Class 4A, District 8 final, Keoni Wallington was the legs.

Wallington scored 23 points and sparked a fourth-quarter comeback as the top-seeded Tigers beat Cocoa on its own court, 59-58.

“He really can set the tone for our attack and getting other guys the ball,” Holy Trinity coach Steven Henderson said. “He’s our solid rock. He really changed it around for us.”

A Cocoa surge after halftime put the second seed in control for a time, but a 12-2 run to start the final period put Holy Trinity back in charge and led it to a Thursday home game as regional competition begins next week. Cocoa will travel.

Hogan was a major contributor himself, scoring 19 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing out a pair of assists. J’V’on Butler didn’t score, but he had nine boards. It was Cocoa’s rebounding that kept the home Tigers in the game before intermission. Holy Trinity tried to pull away with an eight-point lead in the second but didn’t put the game out of reach.

A pair of 3s in the third period helped Cocoa take the lead. It was Hudson who tied the game at 36 at 2:38 of the quarter.

Hogan assured the win in the final seconds. Wallington, whose layup regained the lead for Holy Trinity at 6:01, missed a free throw with 31 seconds to play and his team up by three. Hogan rebounded the miss, was fouled and made the second of two. When Cocoa hit a buzzer-beating 3, that foul shot provided the difference.

“When they started getting the putbacks and started making it difficult for us to get in transition, we struggled,” Henderson said.

Class 3A

Florida Air captured the District 13 championship, 87-56, over Melbourne Central Catholic The Falcons took control early and jumped out to a 47-22 lead at halftime.

Florida Air guard Julius Johnson and center Ted Kapita led the Falcons, combining for 45 points. Johnson added 10 assists and seven rebounds, while Kapita had 22 rebounds and 10 blocks.

MCC’s Kellen Rogers scored 24 points, including six 3-pointers.
