Homecoming king Cook leads Silver Creek, 45-12

For Silver Creek senior Cameron Cook, it was a night of firsts and certainly one to remember.

Cook scored three touchdowns, kicked a 35-yard field goal and booted six extra points as the host Dragons whipped Clarksville 45-12 on Friday night.

Plus, the 6-foot-2 Cook — who also plays basketball and baseball — was named homecoming king.

“It was an awesome night,” he said. “I’ll remember it for the rest of my life.”

The field goal came on Cook’s first attempt this year, and his 90-yard kickoff return for a score was the first time he had run back a kick.

“I didn’t think they would kick it to me, to be honest,” he said.

He also caught scoring passes of 8 and 26 yards from quarterback Jake Meadors.

Only one other player scored for the Dragons (3-2, 3-1 Mid-Southern Conference). Jason Jent, a gritty, hard-nosed running back, rambled for 156 yards on 26 carries and scored three TDs.

Silver Creek got off to a quick start, sparking by a 31-yard pass from Meadors to Jacob Garrett, who took it to the Clarksville 5-yard line. Jent then carried twice, the second a 2-yard scoring plunge with 9:15 left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Clarksville’s Nate Knight fumbled deep in the Generals’ territory, and Kyle Stevens picked it up and returned it to the 17. Two plays later, Jent ran in from the 9 and the Dragons led 14-0.

Clarksville scored its only points of the first half on Wyatt Kissel’s 36-yard TD pass to Andrew Wright. Then the Dragons took over. Cook returned the ensuing kickoff for a TD, Jent had a 15-yard TD run and Silver Creek scored 31 straight points.

Clarksville (3-3, 2-3) added a late score on a 43-yard pass from Kissel to Knight.

Knight, who rushed for just 47 yards in the first half, finished with 110. One of the top rushers in the state, he now has 1,049 yards in six games.

“He’s a great runner,” Silver Creek coach Jason Hawkins said. “But we did what we had to do. It was 35-6 at the half and he had 47 yards.”

Clarksville coach Steve Cooley said three first-half turnovers and untimely penalties cost the Generals.

“They came out ready to play and we didn’t,” he said. “We’ve got some work to do. We have to get better.”
