Avon’s Jenna Miller controls the ball deep in the Orioles’ field during No. 1 Brebeuf’s 1-0 win over the No. 3 Orioles in their Class 2A regional semifinal game at Carmel High School’s Murray Stadium on Wednesday, October 15, 2014.
CARMEL – For Brebeuf’s girls soccer team, Wednesday night’s Class 2A Carmel regional semifinal matchup against Avon was one it had hoped for all year.
Last season, the eventual state champion Orioles ended the Braves’ season with a 1-0 victory in the regional finals. This year, undefeated Brebeuf returned the favor with a 1-0 victory of its own.
“The girls were definitely extra pumped up for this game,” Braves coach Angela White explained. “For them, this was their last game that they played last season.”
In Brebeuf’s prior three games, the Braves outscored their opponents by a margin of 26-0. But as the first half drew to a close, Avon looked as if they might contain the Braves’ potent offense by keeping a clean sheet through 40 minutes.
However, with just under 3 minutes remaining in the half, Braves sophomore Emma Mazurek found an opening in the defense and connected with her right foot to put Brebeuf up 1-0 at the half—a lead it would cling to for the remainder of the game.
“I was running down the middle and Shaili Kumar had the ball, and cut it down the line,” said Mazurek of the goal. “I was just right there and she got the ball right to me, and I just hit it home.”
The Orioles were kept in the game by an outstanding effort by senior goalkeeper Kelsey Dossey, who stopped all but one of Brebeuf’s 11 shots on target.
“She made save after save,” White said, “It only takes one, and we just happened to put it past her.”
And when asked how it felt to get that one goal tonight, against the team which ended her season last year, Mazurek said, with a sigh of relief, “It felt so good.”
In the early game, Carmel defeated Cathedral 1-0 (2-3 penalty kicks). With neither team able to break through in regulation or overtime, junior Chandler Backes knocked in the game-winning penalty kick, sending the Greyhounds to the next round.
Carmel will face Brebeuf on Saturday at 12 p.m. in the Class 2A Carmel regional final, where the Greyhounds will likely sport a healthy home advantage.
