Sophomore Zach Kintner won his first varsity match, pushing the Vestal Golden Bears wrestling team to a 42-24 victory in their season-opener against Ithaca on Tuesday night.
Kintner defeated Ithaca’s Ezra Scrachon, winning via a 9-4 decision at 220 pounds.
Sean Degroat and Britton Shaw’s victories in the 195 and 285 weight classes, respectively, capped a comeback for Vestal (1-0). Trailing 24-21 heading into the 195 match, Degroat pinned Will Korb in 59 seconds. Kintner and Shaw followed with back-to-back wins to take the lead and propel the Golden Bears to victory.
Shaw, a senior who missed last season due to injury, pinned Warren Russell in 33 seconds at 285 pounds.
Up next for Vestal is the Bethlehem Round Robin Tournament, beginning on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday at 9 a.m.
Watkins Glen 51, Odessa-Montour 43: At Watkins Glen, Matt Doppel set a pool record in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing with a time of 55.02 to lead the Senecas. Doppel also grabbed first place in the 100 butterfly and was on the winning teams in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Aidan DeBolt was also on the 200 and 400 relay teams, as well as won the 100 and 200 freestyle races.
