Hunterdon Central wins H/W/S tennis tournament title

The Hunterdon Central High School boys tennis team made history on Saturday, sweeping all five flights in the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament en route to the third team title in school history.

In the first singles final, Bradley Strober, the tournament’s second seed, beat top-seeded defending champion Jeremy VanHerwarde of Pope John 6-3, 6-3. Strober’s victory reversed last year’s tournament final, in which VanHerwarde got the win.

In second singles, Zach Cortelyou defeated North Hunterdon’s Jon Detero 6-0, 6-2. It marks the second time in a week that Cortelyou has defeated Detero.

Austin Fields took home the title in third singles, defeating Kevin Trost of Kittatinny 6-3, 6-1. The title marked the Red Devils’ fourth of the afternoon.

Ben Kelly and Jake Baca needed just two sets to find victory in first doubles, as they defeated Kittatinny’s Travis Fernandez and Eric Raser 6-4, 6-1.

The first title of the day for the Red Devils’ came from second doubles players Max Cohen and Josh Blutfield. Cohen and Blutfield defeated North Hunterdon’s Grant Davis and Josh Geernick 6-1, 6-2.

None of the flights made it to the third set, as the Red Devils scored 25 team points to set a new record.
