CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Big I football is back. Or at least it appears that way, after the Independence Patriots shutout another opponent Monday night, defeating West Meck 45-0. The Patriots have not allowed a single point against them all year long, averaging a 37-point margin of victory along the way.

Independence was able to control West Meck from the restart of their contest Monday night. The Patriots scored 24 points in the second quarter and took a 31-0 lead into the intermission. Quarterback Kelvin Hopkins was 12 of 13 for 206 yards and a touchdown in the first half. He was six-for-six in the first quarter for 136 yards and put the Patriots on the board with a 1-yard run on Friday night.

West Mecklenburg struggled moving the ball all game long, totaling just 122 yards offensively. Quarterback Shea’Quan Williams gained 71 of those yards on four carries. The Hawks’ mistakes were compounded with three turnovers against a stout Independence defense. The Hawks have yet to win in their new stadium, and have been outscored 94-0 at home this season.

Independence will host Hough on Friday, a game that will see a boatload of talent on the field for both sides. West Meck has a bye this Friday, but will return to action September 26 at Ardrey Kell.
